This Week's Games and 5 Things to Watch: Round 2
History will be made in Round 2 of the 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season, perhaps in multiple ways. Some well-known and well-established teams will meet for the first time. Some well-known and well-established players are moving up the all-time charts. Here is a little more information about the key storylines in this week’s action.
There is first time for everything
Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem is in its 14th season in the competition and also has one EuroLeague appearance from the turn of the millennium. Buducnost VOLI Podgorica is playing the EuroCup for the 12th time and has three more EuroLeague appearances as well. They have played a combined 284 games in the EuroCup, and have spent 11 seasons playing in the same competition this century alone. Nevertheless, these two teams are set to meet for the first time ever in an official game this Tuesday. These are not the only first-evers for teams this coming round. FIAT Turin plays its first home game in the competition against fellow newcomer MoraBanc Andorra, while Dolomiti Energia Trento is making its first trip for an official game to Russia. Meanwhile, 2016 EuroCup champ Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul is going for its only second victory on Italian soil this century when it visits Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia. Galatasaray has played eight official games this century on the Italian soil, and has only one win.
Matchups that simply happen
While Jerusalem and Buducnost have never played each other despite playing in different European competitions since the early 1980s, some teams in Round 2 meet again despite the chances of that happening being minimal. For instance, ASVEL Villeurbanne and ratiopharm Ulm played in the same European competition for the first time in 2013-14 season, and they do once again this season. And they meet this regular season, just like they did in 2013 when Ulm swept ASVEL. Similar is the case with Lietkabelis Panevezys and FC Bayern Munich, which meet in EuroCup for second straight season even though the Lithuanian team only made its EuroCup debut last season, and is in only its third European season. Likewise with Darussafaka Istanbul and Cedevita Zagreb; This is only the second time ever that the two teams will play in the same competition, but that did not stop them from meeting the first time - they split road wins in the 2015-16 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague – and this season will clash once again.
Battle on the sidelines
Round 2 of the 7DAYS EuroCup will be extra special for Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar head coach Sasa Obradovic, who welcomes his former team ALBA Berlin. Obradovic coached ALBA for four seasons, from 2012 to 2016, and made some history at the time by twice making the EuroLeague Top 16 in addition to winning three German Cups. To make it more special, Obradovic will face one of the true coaching greats on the other side, Aito Garcia Reneses, a winner of multiple European competitions, including the 2008 ULEB Cup , and also the 2015 EuroCup Coach of the Year. In another notable coaching matchup, EuroLeague-winning coach David Blatt and his Darussafaka welcome Cedevita, which is led by the 2012 EuroCup Coach of the Year, Jure Zdovc. Two other former EuroCup Coach of the Year trophy winners face colleagues who have built quite respectable resumes of their own. Dolomiti’s Maurizio Buscaglia, the 2016 Coach of the Year, who is head of the bench with the club for an eighth season, travels to St. Petersburg to face Zenit and head coach Vasily Karasev, who has never coached at another club since he went into coaching in 2010. Meanwhile, in the clash between Jerusalem and Buducnost, 2013 EuroCup Coach of the Year Fotis Katsikaris of Jerusalem will host Buducnost’s Aleksandar Dzikic, who guided Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius to EuroCup Finals in 2012.
Milestones
After winning its 100th game in the competition in Round 1, it will be a special occasion for Herbalife Gran Canaria when it goes on the road to face Tofas Bursa on Tuesday in Round 2. It will mark Gran Canaria becoming only the fourth team in competition history with 150 games played. Ahead of Gran Canaria are only Valencia Basket with 182 games, Jerusalem with 167, and UNICS with 152 games played. RETAbet Bilbao Basket forward Axel Hervelle, who grabbed 4 rebounds in the opening round, needs 9 more rebounds to become only the third player in EuroCup history to reach 500 boards for his career. His longtime RETAbet teammate Alex Mumbru is close to reaching a milestone of his own as he needs only 10 index points to become 17th player in competition history to reach 1,000 for his career.
Moving up the all-time charts
Last week, in that milestone win No.100, it was former Gran Canaria player and now Zenit sharpshooter Kyle Kuric who became the most accurate three-point shooter in competition history. By making 4 of 6 triples. Kuric improved his career-average to 48.84%, surpassing the previous leader on the all-time charts, Xavier Corosine. Kuric is 17th on the all-time list with 126 three-pointers made, and second among active players. Mumbru leads all active players with 135 threes made, currently good for 12th place in competition history. Another player destined to move up the ranks is Gran Canaria playmaker Alberto Oliver, who had 3 assists in Round 1, and is now tied with E.J. Rowland for third place on the all-time assists charts with 351. Oliver needs 1 assist to become the sole owner of third place, while Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar point guard Dmitry Khvostov needs 2 more to tie Omar Cook for seventh place. Khvostov currently sits at 307 assists, while Jerusalem’s guard Yotam Halperin is next and needs just 1 more assist to become only the ninth man with 300 career assists in the competition.
