We had very little on the defensive end from our big men apart from Kasun, who was solid as usual. It seems that the term box out doesn't exist in Croatia and the Israelis constantly got second and third offences.
Planinić has all the physical attributes to be a great player. He is 6'7" and has great court speed. Really, he should be like a Papaloukas, instead, he is the most unintelligent player I've ever seen.
He constantly runs into heavy traffic trying to make something happen and he takes some stupid shots. Also, for someone who looks so smooth when handling the ball, he makes way too many turnovers. Last night, and against Spain, he gave the ball away in situations that left you scratching your head. I still believe that with another season or two of Euroleague basketball he can become a very good player. He has everything at his disposal he just needs to learn how to use it.
If Marko Popović had Planinić's physical attributes he'd be one of the best PGs in the world.
The fact is that we've got a very inexperienced team (we're the 3rd youngest team in the comp behind SRB and SLO) with only one mature bodied big man in Mario Kasun. Barać played about 8 minutes last night and did well, particluarly on defence. Unfortunately, Prkačin is still hopeless in offence while Banić is a good player but lacks size to be a genuine PF. It goes without saying that Vujčić would have helped us a lot, but even the presence of one of Žižić (6'10"), Nicević (6'11"), Pašalić (6'10") or Lončar (6'11") would have been invaluable.
We're a team that relies too heavily on our shooting. When our 3pt% is over 40% we can beat anyone, but when it's off (2nd half last night) we can lose to anyone.
Anyway, it's back to the drawing board. After the Latvia loss we would never have dreamed of having 4 points after the first elimination round game so we shouldn't get too down on the team. We still have a lot to play for and a win against Greece tomorrow means we're back on track.
