Shaq Once Told Kobe He Would “Kill Him”

Finally, we have the resurfacing of the Shaq vs. Kobe feud, an almost decade-long quarrel that ripped apart one of the greatest duos in NBA history. In Shaq’s new autobiography, Shaq Uncut: My Story, the Diesel shares his take on the feud, how it all got started and, well, quite a bit more:

On how the feud began:

“Kobe runs right out to Jim Gray and does this interview where he lets me have it. He said I was fat and out of shape. He said I was milking my toe injury for more time off, and the injury wasn’t even that serious. (Yeah, right. It only ended my damn career.) He said I was “lobbying for a contract extension when we have two Hall of Famers playing pretty much for free.” I’m sitting there watching this interview and I’m gonna explode. Hours earlier we had just promised our coach we’d stop. It was a truce broken. I let the guys know, “I’m going to kill him.”

On Kobe confronting him about Colorado:

Kobe stands up and goes face-to-face with me and says, “You always said you’re my big brother, you’d do anything for me, and then this Colorado thing happens and you never even called me.” I did call him. … So here we are now, and we find out he really was hurt that we didn’t stand behind him. That was something new. I didn’t think he gave a rat’s ass about us either way. “Well, I thought you’d publicly support me, at least,” Kobe said. “You’re supposed to be my friend.”

On Shaq’s threat to ‘Kill Kobe’:

Brian Shaw chimed in with “Kobe, why would you think that? Shaq had all these parties and you never showed up for any of them. We invited you to dinner on the road and you didn’t come. Shaq invited you to his wedding and you weren’t there. Then you got married and didn’t invite any of us. And now you are in the middle of this problem, this sensitive situation, and now you want all of us to step up for you. We don’t even know you.” Everyone was starting to calm down when I told Kobe, “If you ever say anything like what you said to Jim Gray ever again, I will kill you.”

We already brought you excerpts where Shaq throws Kobe Bryant under the bus (and only Brian Shaw had a level head and dealt with the situation, but you don’t want him to be the Lakers coach). And there was the part where Shaq said he didn’t back down from Pat Riley.

Next up, LeBron. And how he didn’t listen to coach Mike Brown (via Hoopsworld).

LeBron was a huge star. He was as big as I was in 2000 in L.A. when I was dominating the league. … Our coach, Mike Brown, was a nice guy, but he had to live on edge because nobody was supposed to be confrontational with LeBron. Nobody wanted him to leave Cleveland, so he was allowed to do whatever he wanted to do.

I remember one day in a film session LeBron didn’t get back on defense after a missed shot. Mike Brown didn’t say anything about it. He went to the next clip and it was Mo Williams not getting back and Mike was saying, “Yo, Mo, we can’t have that. You’ve got to hustle a little more.” So Delonte West is sitting there and he’s seen enough and he stands up and says, “Hold up, now. You can’t be pussyfooting around like that. Everyone has to be accountable for what they do, not just some us.” Mike Brown said, “I know, Delonte. I know.” Mike knew Delonte was right. …


O'Neal predicts that Brown, now coach of the Lakers, also will not discipline Kobe Bryant, whom O'Neal slams in the book.

"I'm not sure if Kobe is going to listen to Mike Brown. LeBron never really did. Here's what we do know: Kobe will definitely be in charge."

Michael Jordan, once the NBA's greatest player but now just another money-losing owner of a small-market team, is adamant about not giving any more concessions to players in their ongoing labor dispute, according to The New York Times.
Jordan, the Charlotte Bobcats owner, has emerged as a leader of a faction of 10 to 14 hard-line owners who are determined to cap the players' share of basketball-related income at 50 percent, the Times reported Friday.

All 29 owners are set to meet Saturday morning in New York City before the NBA and the players union return to the negotiating table in the afternoon.

About 10 to 14 owners, led by Jordan, are expected to reiterate their stance to NBA commissioner David Stern, which might make it more difficult to negotiate an end to the lockout.

The players received 57 percent in the last labor deal and have so far offered to reduce that share to 52.5. However, the hard-line owners wanted the players’ share capped at 47 percent and are upset with the 50-50 proposal, according to the Times.

Jordan was fined $100,000 this summer for speaking publicly about the need to reduce costs but has largely stayed in the background until now.

The Times notes that during the last labor crisis, in 1998, Jordan — then a superstar who made $33 million in his final season with the Chicago Bulls — famously challenged Abe Pollin, the Washington Wizards owner at the time, reportedly bellowing, “If you can’t make a profit, you should sell your team.”

Jordan has been Charlotte’s majority owner for two years after buying a piece of the team five years ago. The Bobcats have reportedly been losing around $7 million per season.

The New York Daily News reported Friday that a minority stake in the Bobcats has been put up for sale by one of Jordan's partners, but Jordan is not interested in selling his stake in the franchise.
