If the Jazz could just get someone, anyone, to stand up and claim the job of shooting guard, Jerry Sloan perhaps could finally wrap yet another episode of What's My Starting Lineup.

Utah forward Carlos Boozer goes up for a shot against Sacramento forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim.
Instead, Sloan has spent much the preseason reviewing a string of contestants ranging from contenders to pretenders to play alongside point guard Deron Williams, small forward Andrei Kirilenko and the interchangeable power forward/center combination of Mehmet Okur and Carlos Boozer.
"We're still looking around there," the Jazz coach said when asked about the question-mark position, "to see what we've got — see if we can shoot the ball, and execute, and know what situation basketball is."
      Friday was no different.
Second-season youngster C.J. Miles got the start at the 2 in a 112-96 exhibition loss to the Sacramento Kings, making him fourth different starter — along with Gordan Giricek, Derek Fisher and first-round rookie Ronnie Brewer — at the off-guard position in five preseason games to date.
      Predictably, reviews have been mixed.
Miles got off to a great start Saturday, nabbing a steal on the Jazz's first defensive stand of the exhibition and converting it — after getting fouled on a fastbreak — into a couple early free throws.
He nearly created a second turnover on the Kings' very next possession, too — but then spent much of the remainder of an eight-point night battling foul trouble.
"Just like any young player," Sloan said, "he got a couple silly fouls he wasn't ready for. People, they run right at young guys. And guys know how they can take advantage of you. Those are the tricks of the trade. If you don't understand them, then it makes it tough for you to stay out there and play basketball."
Miles was spelled Friday by Brewer, who got off to a slow start in his first couple preseason games — but rebounded with a strong outing in the Jazz's third exhibition, a visit with Detroit last Monday, and followed up with an effort against Sacramento that included a nifty play at the end of the opening quarter.

Utah center Mehmet Okur, right, lays the ball into the basket over Sacamento guard Kevin Martin.
Brewer stepped in front of an in-bounds pass made by Kings big man Brad Miller with 4.8 seconds to go, then had the wherewithal to drive a few steps by putting up a teardrop that beat buzzer and put Utah up 29-27.
The University of Arkansas product took his lone turn so far starting in Thursday's Delta Center win over Portland, and afterward Sloan made no bones about what it will take for Brewer to earn big minutes when come next month the regular season gets rolling.
"He's got to get in shape — whatever it takes to get in shape to be able to get up and down the floor and run," Sloan said. "This is a running game."
Several others remain in the running for the right to start alongside Williams in Sloan's opening-night backcourt when the Houston Rockets visit the Delta Center on Nov. 1.
Veteran offseason acquisition Derek Fisher might have seemed like a reasonable bet before training camp opened, and still could be. He, however, remains sidelined by a badly bruised pelvis and isn't even on the Jazz's current three-game exhibition trip, which continues with Monday's visit to Portland.
"There are times we'll probably play him at 2," Sloan said. "That's why we got him . . . because he can guard a lot of those guys, and a lot of guys will have to guard him a little bit too.
"But I don't know how he'll get comfortable with our team. We'll just have to wait and see."
There always is the possibility of using swingmen Andrei Kirilenko and Matt Harpring interchangeably at shooting guard and small forward, which is how the Jazz finished last season — and could wind up starting this one.
That potential solution, though, drastically weakens the Jazz's bench.
Then there is Giricek, who started 36 games last season — mostly at shooting guard — before succumbing to an Achilles tendon injury. He has made two preseason starts at the 2 this month, and nailed a 23-foot halftime buzzer-beater Friday to make it 50-47 Kings before Sacramento eventually pulled away after the break.
Giricek, too, incurred Sloan's wrath after shooting 1-of-4 from the field against the Trail Blazers on Thursday: "I wasn't as disappointed in shot selection," the Jazz coach said when asked about Giricek's offensive production, "as I was his defense."
But Giricek did atone with a nine-point night on 4-of-6 field shooting Friday. That, combined with decent defense, may give him an inside edge, especially if Fisher is slow to return.
"I thought Giri's moments out there on the floor were good," Sloan said. "He had struggled a great deal, (but) he knows how to play basketball. It's just a matter of getting him to compete ... If he does that, he can play. But if he doesn't compete hard, I can't play him.
"If he's not gonna compete, then I'll play young kids and let them learn how to play and try to catch up."
