His debut as DeShawn Stevenson''s replacement made a splash. But Sasha Pavlovic has looked like he''s drowning ever since.
And his coach is thinking of pulling him out of the pool altogether.
The rookie guard, handed a starting job when Stevenson was traded last week, responded with 16 points in New York. But he followed up that performance by getting into early foul trouble in each of his next two starts, and he shot a combined 2-for-11 in just 27 combined minutes.
OK, he''s a rookie. Inconsistent shooting is part of the package.
What Jerry Sloan objects to, however, is Pavlovic''s occasional half-speed effort, which the coach says is partly to blame for the quick fouls.
"He''s not ready to play hard, so he makes silly fouls. He turns the ball over, and casually runs through stuff," Sloan said. "You can''t play the game casually. Ten years from now, he''ll wish he had played harder."
He might make that wish even sooner. Sloan started Pavlovic against the Sonics on Wednesday, but said he is considering another lineup change. Gordan Giricek, acquired from Orlando for Stevenson, could inherit the job once he is more comfortable with Utah''s offense. Or, "Mo [Williams] played real well at the two-guard position the other night," Sloan said. "Maybe I''ll play him. He deserves a chance if Sasha''s not going to compete hard for the job. I''m not just going to give Sasha the job."
Actually, Sloan admitted, he did just give Pavlovic the job, but that was because trading Stevenson left the Jazz short-handed. The coach hoped that the rookie would seize the chance and give an all-out effort. Instead, Sloan said, Pavlovic has been easy to guard because he is too passive on the floor.
"I''ll be honest, I''ve tried to give him an opportunity to learn by playing. I''ve tried to give him some minutes, and hopefully teach him what he has to do. And he has to work harder," Sloan said. "Sometimes young players think they''re working hard just by being on the floor. But when you''re not working hard, you make silly fouls and now you have to go sit down. Then you come back and think, ''Coach is not playing me right.'' All these thing go through your mind. But now we''ll see if he''s good enough to work through this."

Gugliotta gets start

In just his second game with the Jazz, Tom Gugliotta was promoted to the starting lineup when Michael Ruffin''s right ankle was too sore to play.
Ruffin couldn''t recall any specific play that injured his ankle, but said it has been growing more sore for the past week. With back-to-back games on the schedule, the Jazz decided to treat the injury with an extra day of rest. A decision on Friday''s game won''t be made until the Jazz arrive in Sacramento, but trainer Gary Briggs said Ruffin, who has started 23 games for the Jazz, is probable against the Kings.

Sloan said Giricek has the potential to play small forward at times, but the Jazz don''t intend to teach him that role for a few weeks, until he knows the offense from the guard position better. "Gordan hasn''t really played enough. He''s trying to learn the two position first," Sloan said. Dakle, Giricek bi trebao uskoro biti u starting lineup. Svaka cast Pavlovicu ali mislim da jos nije na razini Giriceka (sto ne znaci da je Gordan na bog zna kakvoj razini ).Bas me zanima dali ce sada dobiti vise suteva (mislim izradjenih) a ne kao u Orlandu kada su ga pretezno izbjegavali tako da je on ponekad morao pokusavat na silu (tako barem on kaze). No sigurno treba nesto vremena dok nauci njihov stil i taktiku igre.
