Inter CEO Ernesto Paolillo has confirmed that the club have no plans to make a L40 million bid for Tottenham’s Gareth Bale.
The
Guardian claims that the Serie A side are to line up a move for the
Welshman in the summer, making him the most expensive British player of
all time.
“It is incorrect,” Paolillo told Bloomberg. “It’s not true.”
The
fee that Inter were believed to be willing to pay has only been beaten
by transfers involving Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Kaka and
Zinedine Zidane.
The transfer record for a British player remains the L29m Manchester United paid Leeds United for Rio Ferdinand in 2002.
Bale
is reportedly at the top of Inter's wish-list after two stunning
performances against them in the Champions League group stage.
He scored a hat-trick in a 4-3 defeat in the San Siro and then inspired a 3-1 win in the return at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham
have consistently stated that Bale is not for sale at any price, and
Inter's bid was expected to spark other clubs into action, which could
make his value rise.
Real Madrid have also been linked with a move for Bale and reportedly made inquiries about the player last summer.
