Croatia claims second major win over England
Croatia is claiming a second major victory over England after
beating the Midland's town of Warwick to claim a new world record for
the most smurfs in one place.
Not content with knocking England
out of the Euro 2008, Croatia threw down the gauntlet again at the
weekend to urge Criatian smurfs to head to the southern town of Komin
for the smurfing world record attempt.
The town was desperate to
get on the map, and staged the smurf gathering contest two weeks ago
after reading on the Internet that the record was 290 smurfs held by a
group of Americans.
Hundreds of Croatians painted themselves
blue and put on silly hats to notch up 395 smurfs, only to be told
their information was out of date and the record had already been taken
by 451 smurfs set by Warwick University Students’ Union last July.

When they contacted Guinness officials this week to register their world record, they were told "sorry - too late".
At
the time the organisers of the failed Croatian record attempt Velibor
Suman said: "We could easily have gotten more Smurfs, but we thought
that over a hundred more than the American record we found on the
Internet would be enough."
Now at the second attempt the Croatians managed to get together 533 smurfs in one place to beat the Guinness World Record.
They
put up posters appealing for smurfs with the caption "Komin against the
English" and spokesman Suman added. "This time we did not want to waste
the opportunity to beat the English. We've come up with 533 properly
dressed smurfs. We've beaten England in football in the last two
official matches and we've decided to do it again by bringing together
more smurfs in one place as well."
"My aim is to dress every single one of the 1,300 residents of Komin in smurfs' outfit next year", added Suman.
Sunday's
event was organized as the part of the area's carnival festivities and
to mark the 50th anniversary of the famous comic characters.
The oldest smurf in Komin was 78 and the youngest one was only one month old.
Guinness
representatives were not present in Komin, but a Croatian lawyer was on
hand to verify the count and it was filmed by Croatian TV as well.
