Slaven Bilic reckons his Croatian team will get their revenge on Fabio Capello’s men for last year’s drubbing in Zagreb.
Bilic
believes his side have improved enormously since their shock 4-1 defeat
last September – and that he has become a better manager as a result.
If
England beat Croatia in Wednesday’s vital group six World Cup qualifier
they will book their place at the South Africa finals with two games to
spare.
But the former West Ham favourite has other ideas.
Bilic said: “We are definitely a stronger team now. The main thing is that we are playing much better as a team.
“We
have been missing certain key players. We had a long spell without
Eduardo and, of course this kind of thing affects the way we play.
“Now
we have lost Luka Modric and that is also a big blow. Without these
kind of players we have suffered – but we still have a great team.
“I believe our spirit has never been better. We have a group of players that can beat anybody.”
The
Croatian boss is desperate for a repeat of the “Wally with the Brolly”
match in November 2007, when they beat Steve McClaren’s outfit 3-2 to
prevent England qualifying for Euro 2008.
He is relieved the crunch clash is at Wembley because his side play much better away from the intense atmosphere of Zagreb.
He
said: “Sometimes when we play at home, and we don’t get going in the
first 15 minutes, we start to panic. Our crowd is great but sometimes
their passion doesn’t always help.
“If
we don’t score a goal or our opponents keep the ball even for a minute
– or have a chance or even a corner – the fans start to panic and this
gets to the players and we start to panic.
“This doesn’t happen when we play away. We are much calmer and we wait for our moment.”
Bilic,
who intends to stand down as manager after the qualifying stages, has
been linked in the past with several top English clubs, including West
Ham.
But his stock fell after Croatia were knocked out of Euro 2008 by Turkey.
However,
the 40-year-old believes this experience – and the thrashing by
Capello’s men – was good for his managerial development.
He said: “Since those things I am a much calmer person and manager.”
Three
players from his Under-21 squad – Eduardo, Modric and Vedran Corluka –
have gone on to great things and are now Premier League stars.
Bilic added: “The fact that I knew five or six players from the Under-21s has helped. We clicked immediately.
“I
know them and their families. We know everything about each other which
means I can be straight and honest with them. And it helps when we face
tough situations.”
Eduardo
faces a tough situation in a few days’ time - with England fans likely
to give him stick after his tumble to win a penalty in the Champions
League qualifier against Celtic.
But
Bilic said: “We are talking about a player who is a role model of a
sportsman. I simply cannot understand how he can be punished.”
The
feeling is mutual. “Slaven Bilic is a key man for us,” said Eduardo.
“He did it all for us. He changed the squad and our tactics.
“And he found some young talents like Modric, Corluka, Rakitic and Vukojevic.
“I am not afraid of the Wembley game. Why should I be? Let England fear us.”
