Bayern improves with an unbeaten record, 3:0 against Augsburg (video highlights)
3:0
Improvement. This is the keyword to the 3:0 win that FC Bayern registered against Augsburg on Saturday. It could have been 5:0 due to missed chances and keeper saves. The boys can still celebrate a 37-game unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga, one more than Hamburg’s previous record.
First half: crackers
The first 45 minutes were much better than anything we have seen in a few weeks. The team generated good early runs and chances in the box. The boys kept their feet moving while in possession, which made it hard for Augsburg to keep up and stop them. This is important in any sport and it allowed to pass the ball around much faster.
Starting in defensive midfield, Javi Martinez was the center of a tactical change. He played deep to keep firm control over the defence, while centre-backs Boateng and Dante often went wide to receive his passes.
Javi Martinez, the new “false 2”.
While the play has improved overall, crackers of goals gave Bayern the lead. Franck Ribéry sparked the attack, led counters, forced fouls and corners and eventually scored a beautiful direct free kick. Boateng’s finish was fantastic in the box for the first goal.
Most of our chances came from passes from the side to the middle.
The first half was not perfect, but it was close to textbook football. Augsburg didn’t get many chances to counter or take shots at Manuel Neuer, thanks to good coverage and successful challenges. In fact, they had only one shot against our 12.
Second half: cruise control
We can’t say as much about the second half, which was a bit more quiet, aside from many missed chances in the first few minutes.
I could add that Mario Götze was less of a factor in this game than when he was subbed in previous matches. On the other hand, Arjen Robben replaced him and he was eager for some action, cutting in the middle and shooting with his left foot. He also made a great run to prevent a ball to become a goal kick, centering to Kroos who failed to register a shot.
The spin
This was a nice performance. While not perfect and lacking a little bit of opportunism, Bayern finally started a game on the right foot and rarely looked threatened. It was a much-needed result, especially with Dortmund dropping three points against Wolfsburg.
Goals
1:0 Dante sends a header down to Boateng on the left in the box. He turns around and roofs it in with his left foot (5')
2:0 Wow… Ribéry hits the free kick, which goes up to the right to tickle the crossbar. The keeper can’t do anything about it (43')
3:0 Müller takes the late penalty and goes low left while the keeper goes right (90')
