Bayern Hoffenheim preview, the B team show
Bayern Hoffenheim preview: Tick, tick tick. The final stages of the season are coming fast. FC Bayern can afford the luxury of heavy rotation on Saturday against Hoffenheim, preserving its energy for the bigger game against Manchester United a few days later.
Hoffenheim, the worst defence
Injuries: Paterok, Vukcevic, Schipplock
Which team should you watch when not watching Bayern? Hoffenheim, of course. They have the second best attack in the Bundesliga and the worst defence. Goals guaranteed by and against this side.
Under manager Gisdol, they field a 4-2-3-1 with Roberto Firmino is a very creative playmaker. He has a great chemistry with striker Anthony Modeste and right wing Kevin Volland. Firmino is a great dribbler and an effective passer, especially when sending throughballs in.
Anthony Modeste is quite a finisher. Very strong and good in the air, he has a nose for goal.
Kevin Volland is one of the most promising wingers in the Bundesliga. He makes great use of space and his quick release results in hard shots or benders that keepers have problems saving. Definitely a transfer target for other teams this summer.
Together, this trio is extremely dangerous on the counterattack. When they run forward and link up to each other, look out. The team’s overall passing accuracy is terrible, but all it takes is one play for them to put the ball in the back of the net or to earn a penalty.
The problem for Hoffenheim is defending. They may be aggressive when tackling, but their pace and positioning are not good. You can beat them by dribbling or running hard at them. Their coverage is poor and defending in the air is a problem.
In addition, their keeper has timing problems on long balls and corners. It can definitely be exploited on set pieces.
Possible lineup

Grahl/Casteels
Johnson, Strobl, Süle, Beck
Rudy, Polanski, Salihovic
Volland, Firmino, Elyounoussi

Bayern, entering rotation mode
Injuries: none
After winning the league title early, FC Bayern will be a different proposition. Pep Guardiola can focus on tinkering tactics and rotating his players to keep their legs fresh to start in the Champions League and the DFB Pokal. This, clearly, is the idea situation to defend last year’s treble.
Now is the time to give starts to the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Javi Martinez, who have been under-used this season. With the first leg against Manchester United scheduled for 1 April, we are very likely to see major changes in the lineup.
The game plan shouldn’t be too complicated. Look for occasions to attack against the weak defence, which will try to regroup without having the skills to defend as Mainz did last week. Use pace, short passing and dribbling to exploit their weaknesses. And take out some of the starters in the second half to save their energy for the Champions League.
The only thing that bothers me is the risk of picking up injuries. Hoffenheim can be very aggressive one-on-one, so it may be a good idea to add width to the game plan.
But I see no reason why Bayern shouldn’t win this by two or three goals. The opponent isn’t good enough defensively to make this a tight game.
