Hamburg Bayern preview: R for Relegation
Hamburg Bayern preview: If you feel bad about FC Bayern failing to qualify for the Champions League final, imagine how the Hamburger SV fans (Saturday’s opponents) are feeling. They are close to being relegated after decades in the Bundesliga!
Hamburg, rebuilding needed
Injuries: Beister, Rajkovic, Lam, Naflu, Lasogga. Suspension: Arslan.
The story of a long-term failure. Internal conflicts, mismanagement, useless spending, short-term thinking. Hamburger SV is typical of Bundesliga teams that forget to develop their squads with youth, going for transfers in order to preserve their forgotten glories.
After going through several managers, the current one being Mirko Slomka, the red shorts are in a genuine crisis. They are most likely to play a relegation playoff game, unless they go through the humiliation of falling further to a direct relegation spot.
Hamburg isn’t a joy to watch. Pretty much everything is going wrong with its defence. Goalkeeper René Adler is shaky, not being worth a call-up by the German national team for the World Cup. Playmaker Rafael van der Vaart is not the saviour he was last season. The attack has decent talents, but striker Artjoms Rudnevs was loaned to Hannover before key injuries.
Heiko Westermann, a versatile right-back/central defender who will sometimes score a goal but his mates often forget how to defend.
That is ironical because when Slomka arrived, he gave the team one priority: putting pressure on the opponent and defending. Bad habits don’t disappear that easily and HSV even fails at covering the other guys on throw-ins. Perhaps they should call 9-1-1 for help.
If you have to attack one guy, go for number 3, Michael Mancienne in central defence. His coverage is among the worst in the German top flight.
A revelation is Hakan Calhanoglu, whose influence in the last third of the pitch is growing and whose shot is amazing. Good as a winger/makeshift striker.
Possible lineup
Hamburger SV (4-2-3-1)
Adler
Diekmeier, Westermann, Mancienne, Jansen
Badelj, Rincon
Rincon, van der Vaart, Calhanoglu
Maggio
Bayern, momentum needed again
Injury: Starke. Suspension: Rafinha.
Bad news: the team won’t go to the Champions League final. Good news: the injury list is getting short, Tom Starke being the only guy who still needs medical treatments. Thiago, Shaqiri and Badstuber are all training now.
What the Reds need to do in this game, beyond exploiting Hamburg’s defensive weaknesses, is getting back into the groove. Pep Guardiola’s season will be judged on the DFB Pokal final result against Borussia Dortmund. A double would crown a good season overall. Failure to win that second title would be seen as bad.
Forget Pep’s transformation plan. This team needs short-term results. It has to dominate the game in the midfield and on the wings again and get ready to beat Dortmund in a couple of weeks.
For this game, I would like the coach to bench Franck Ribéry. The Frenchman is a great asset, but he is going through a bad run of form. The slap he gave to Carvajal in midweek is unacceptable behaviour. He deserves punishment for both reasons. Use Mario Götze instead.
It doesn’t really matter who else Pep selects, besides perhaps Javi Martinez in central midfield to give this team a defensive anchor. What counts is whipping the team back into shape with clear domination and direct attacking.
If we see that on Saturday, expect a win by at least two goals. But will Pep finally adopt a sound game plan? We are afraid of answering that question.
Possible lineup
FC Bayern (4-2-3-1)

Lahm, Boateng, Dante, Alaba
Javi, Schweinsteiger
