Bayern – Hamburg preview, misery loves company

A defeat always feels like misery for FC Bayern, even when the consequences are not serious. It is a good coincidence that it happened this week since the boys will face Hamburger SV, a simply miserable side, on Saturday.
Hamburg, nothing but a former glory
Injuries: Adler, Westermann, Diekmeier, Lam. Suspended: Beister.
Our last scorelines against Hamburg. Cute.
36 games without a defeat, to consecutive Bundesliga titles, the 1983 European Cup, Ernst Happel… such are the memories of a powerful Hamburger SV in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Since, financial mismanagement and a slow downhill path have marked the northern side’s history.
We can’t pass on the opportunity to remind you that Hamburg celebrated in front of their home crowd before Matchday 2 against Hoffenheim. The clowns lost it 1:5.
Today, they sit in 12th position in the league, not much better than the relegation-zone showing they were making a couple of years ago when Thorsten Fink took over. To show us how serious management is, it replaced its sporting director with Oliver Kreuzer in the summer… but kept Fink until September. He was fired after a bad start. It showed their lack of a plan and his replacement, Bert van Marwijk, hasn’t been able to make things that much better.
Having had a decent attack last season, Hamburg lost Heung-Min Son to Leverkusen, who compete in Europe. This leaves Pierre-Michel Lasogga as the only striker who fits in Marwijk’s classic 4-2-3-1 formation that attacks down the wings and sends the ball to a poacher. He’s not super fast, but a classic finisher whether his shots are short-range, long-range or headers. And he releases those shots on a regular basis. He rarely goes offside.
Currently, Hamburg deals with an injury revolving door. Playmaker Rafael van der Vaart could return from injury, which should help the attack to recover its punch. He feeds the ball to his mates and is very dangerous on set pieces. René Adler however just got injured. One of the best and most athletic keepers in Germany, his presence is likely to be missed.
The third anchor in Hamburg is Heiko Westermann, a versatile right-back/central defender who even allowed himself to score a goal this season. But he’s on the injury list.
In general, Hamburg is good in air challenges, free kicks and attacking on the left.
The above description doesn’t sound so bad. Well, we haven’t discussed the defence yet. I have been observing them closely and here is a shopping list of frequent mistakes:
- Late on challenges
- Allows free headers
- Miscommunication
- Little pressure on opponents
- Terrible giveaways
- No fighting spirit
- Lets crosses go through
- Central defence sometimes caught behind the play
As a bonus, central defender Lasse Sobiech made two silly mistakes that directly led to goals in a 0:2 defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 11. One was a stupid back pass and the other was losing footing during a challenge.
Augsburg dominated them with waves of attack, shots and scoring chances last week despite having less possession. They failed to stop crosses and clear in the area, earning a 0:1 defeat. Determination was clearly on the Bavarian side.
The verdict? Hamburger SV sucks.
Possible lineup
Hamburger SV (4-2-3-1)
Drobny
Mancienne, Tah, Djourou, Jansen
Badelj, Arslan
Ilicevic, van der Vaart, Calhanoglu
Lasogga
Bayern, learning from mistakes?
Injuries: Robben, Schweinsteiger, Badstuber. Suspended: Boateng.
This blogger has been a critic of the Bayern defence and 4-1-4-1 formation for weeks and the 2:3 loss against Manchester City exposed the weaknesses for all of Europe to see. Pep Guardiola wrongly used his protégé Thiago in defensive midfield for the last two games, a move that took all protection away from the defence against Money City. As if that was needed, the level of complacency was high when Bayern took the lead, contributing to the defeat.
Will the coach and the team learn from this? We will have a first answer when the Reds release their lineup on Saturday, one hour before the game. I suspect that the internal talks at Säbener Straße – comments from Mathias Sammer – will force some changes, especially at number 6. It would only make sense for Javi to start the game in his natural position instead of warming the bench.
The team will have to deal without Jérôme Boateng, who serves a one-match suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card a week ago. Having played a lot since the beginning of the season and having committed a big mistake against Manchester City, he should benefit from the rest.
The warning shots should push FCB to play a much tighter, more focused game on Saturday. I’d love to see an “experiment” with 4-2-3-1 but the team doesn’t have many options for that in defensive midfield. It would require playing Lahm alongside Javi for the system to work. But I think it would deliver results. It sure did when we destroyed Schalke with Lahm and Schweinsteiger pairing up as a double pivot.
No matter who plays where, I still expect this game to be a win. Because Hamburg truly sucks.
