Hungarian Expert: “Muhamed Besic is the best defender I’ve seen in Hungary.”

Muhamed Besic
We recently wrote on the Muhamed Besic phenomenon. A defensive super-talent virtually ignored by both senior NT manager Safet Susic, and U21 skipper Vlado Jagodic. Unsure of whether we were biased in our opinion, we consulted Tom Mortimer, creator of HungarianFootball.com and general Hungarian football expert.
Muhamed Besic arrived at Ferencváros Budapest in 2012 after a falling out with manager of HSV at the time, Torsten Fink. Besic has played a total of 1315 minutes for his club this season, primarily as a centre-back in the heart of the defense. We asked Tom Mortimer about his quality, and his reply was “He’s been great. Very combative, good positionally, good at bringing the ball out of defense. All round top defender. Can be a bit ill-disciplined at times, but very infrequent. Best defender I’ve possibly ever seen in Hungary, and I still can’t quite believe he’s here.”
Besic has had his fair share of squabbles with coaches, including Jagodic according to some reports, however, if his attitude problems have made way to maturity and a calm demeanor, why does he continue to be ignored by the liked of Susic and Jagodic, when there are clear needs at defensive positions? Muhamed Besic is a versatile player, that can be utilized as an emergency DM, a position that the Bosnian NT is very think on at the moment. Any sort of bench depth would be sorely appreciated. Mortimer; “He doesn’t often play DM. He did when he first joined but now he’s a CB every week. He’s good in midfield, but I think his long-term future, and his best position is at the heart of the defense.”
With the likes of Boris Pandza, a mediocre CB who has been out of commission for months now, Ognjen Vranjes, an average to good defender, who is also recovering from an injury, and Toni Sunjic, another mediocre CB playing his club football in Ukraine, Besic would surely have no issues being a part of the national team.
Our expert agrees about his qualities. “I see him playing for someone like Hamburg again, definitely. He really is well above the rest in our league, and seems to have calmed down off the field which is great! He’ll leave in the summer without a doubt.”
With the likes of Fulham and Tottenham courting the young player recently, how long can we go ignoring this massive talent, who is already part of the NT system?
