Everyone wants to play in the Champions League and I believe we will qualify
Luka Modric.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric has
targeted another top-four finish for the forthcoming season and insists
the club are looking good to reach the latter stages of the UEFA
Champions League.
Modric is currently on international duty with Croatia,
but it has not stopped the Spurs playmaker from looking ahead to the new campaign with his English club.
The 24-year-old believes Harry Redknapp's
side are more than capable of mixing it with the best in Europe this
year after finishing fourth in the Premier League last season.
But
before the Londoners can look towards trips across the continent, they
have to qualify for the Europe's top table via a two-legged clash with
Fernerbahce's conquerors Young Boys.
Modric, though, is convinced they are about to embark on a Euro quest.
"I think we've had a good draw but I don't know a lot about Young Boys," the former Dinamo Zagreb performer told Sky Sports News, before admitting Spurs cannot underestimate the Swiss side.
"They
beat Fernerbahce and that is a good indicator for how good they are. It
won't be easy for us but I think we are favourites.
"Everyone wants to play in the Champions League
and I believe we will qualify.
Injury angst
The
2009/10 campaign was a mixed one for Modric, who at times lit up
England's top flight with some inspired performances, but also missed
three months of the season with a broken fibula.
The creative midfielder claims he had not suffered an injury quite like the one he picked up from a challenge by Lee Bowyer
in the game against Birmingham City
but was glad to have put the nightmare firmly behind him.
"I
had the worst injury in my career," he added. "It was a hard time for
me but I came back after three months and in the first game I scored
(against West Ham) and that gave me a big lift and from that I played
good and we finished fourth.
"I'm happy because I look for the team first, not myself, the team always comes first and then you look at yourself."
Top four tussle
Modric
reckons the new Premier League season will be the most competitive yet
and the Croatian international sees a renewed challenge from Manchester City
and Liverpool
as Spurs' biggest threat to claiming a top-four finish this time around.
"Our ambition is the same as last year - to finish in the top four. If we can further forward then that will be great," he said.
"But
this will be one of the hardest seasons for everyone - Liverpool
brought some players in and Man City brought a lot of players in so it
will be very interesting to see how we finish.
"I think we have
the same squad and that is good for us because we know each other more
and I hope we can repeat the same season like last season or even
better."
