In
just five days since its launch over 6000 people have signed Richard
Corbett MEP's petition demanding an investigation into the 1973
European Cup Winners' Cup final which Leeds United lost 1-0 to AC
Milan.
The match has long been suspected of being fixed with
match referee Christos Michas's performance deemed so dubious he was
banned from officiating in European competition ever again.
Richard,
who has written to members of the Leeds squad from that game, is
calling for an investigation into the match and, should evidence be
found of bribery, the trophy awarded to Leeds.
He said: "The
staggering response to the petition demonstrates the level of feeling
and sense of injustice that still surrounds the match. Match fixing
still goes on today, and Leeds United were by no means the only victims
of it in the past.
"UEFA must start showing a clear commitment to tackling the problem
and prove they are determined to crackdown on bribery and match fixing
in football.
"This is not a matter of being a Leeds United
supporter, but is a question of the integrity of football. I would urge
all football fans to sign the petition."
The petition will be handed to UEFA on May 16th, the 36th anniversary of the match.
