The tough-tackling 26-year-old has gone from strength to strength since joining the English giants from Spartak Moscow two years back, and some feel that he is destined for one of the club’s highest honours if he continues his progression.

"If it happens I'd be delighted, especially at this club but it's not something I have my sights on,” said Vidic.

"Being captain means a lot to you and it's a great honour.

"I just play my game and whether I'm captain or not doesn't change what I do on the pitch."

For now Vidic is happy as pie just getting to play alongside some of his boyhood idols on a daily basis.

"I used to watch Giggsy and Scholesy and now I play with them every day,” he said. “It's a great feeling.

"Giggsy is just another person – a very professional player, but also just a person and a friend.

"Scholesy loves football and he loves having the ball at his feet.

"He takes a lot of enjoyment from playing passes, scoring goals and even making tackles."

Vidic is currently in the middle of what could escalate into a full-blown club versus country row, as Sir Alex Ferguson is none to happy, to say the least, that Serbia's Euro 2008 qualifier with Kazakhstan has been rescheduled for this coming Saturday.

The United boss is expected to put up a fight to have Vidic available to face Bolton – especially if it ends up that Serbia are already qualified – seeing that next Saturday is not a recognised international weekend.
