Saturday newspaper reports claimed that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is in talks with a group of Tyneside-based investors who are looking to buy the club.

No names have been mentioned (and opinion differs over whether former Chairman Freddy Shepherd is involved), but the price being quoted is nearer £80m than £100m.

More substance to the story is expected next week, when Alan Shearer will return to Tyneside after taking a short break in Portugal.
