An eighth game unbeaten means Fulham have equalled their finest Premier League sequence, set in 2001, but a fourth successive goalless draw away from home indicates a side that favours efficiency over entertainment. Only twice all season have their travelling fans had a goal to celebrate, the worst record in the league, and here they played the side with the lowest goal tally at home, with predictable results.

If the statistics appeared unpromising, so was the football. The first half featured one good chance, two fine saves and little else and only in the last 10 minutes of the game did either side put together a sustained spell of pressure. In that period, with Fulham visibly tiring, it was perversely they who came closest to scoring.

Five minutes from time Vedran Corluka advanced from right-back, pushing a pass to Jermaine Jenas whose return ball was mis-hit, and with possession lost, one touch from Simon Davies sent Andrew Johnson clean through. Crucially, the striker stumbled as he prepared to shoot and Heurelho Gomes scrambled a save.

"We're doing well defensively but that's not because we've got 11 men behind the ball and we're kicking the ball into the stand and hoping for the best," said the Fulham manager, Roy Hodgson. "We're trying to play as much football as the opposition. Tottenham are a good side that make a lot of chances, and the way we restricted them here is a good sign for the future."

Spurs carved few opportunities, with Benoit Assou-Ekotto responsible for their best chances. From his first-half centre Aaron Lennon forced Mark Schwarzer into an excellent save, while later he set up Luka Modric for a header just off target.

Fulham's defensive solidity was particularly impressive given their centre-half, Brede Hangeland, was absent through illness. Chris Baird played his first full game of the season instead, and though he impressed they will be glad that Hangeland should be fit to face Chelsea tomorrow.

Spurs, meanwhile, head to West Bromwich with only goal difference keeping them out of the relegation places and their battle for safety far from a conclusion. "We're going to be stuck in it for a while," said Harry Redknapp. "We're not going to suddenly walk out of it."

Another striker, the priority for January's transfer window, should help. Given Fulham's inability to score, it was surprising that Redknapp spent yesterday drooling over one of their strikers.

"I thought Bobby Zamora was outstanding," he said. "I wish he was still at Tottenham. They let him go, thought he wasn't good enough. Maybe he wasn't good enough when they had Berbatov and Keane, but he looked all right to me."

Fulham expose Harry Redknapp's weakness

Before Tottenham Hotspur fans start panicking at their inability to score goals and to haul themselves away from the relegation zone, they need to acknowledge that this was not a good time for their club to face Fulham. Roy Hodgson's side can boast their best run of form in the Premier League, they are unbeaten in eight games and yesterday recorded their fourth goalless away draw on the trot.

They did so without Brede Hangeland, their towering, influential and coveted centre half, and with Mark Schwarzer in excellent form in goal. That, though, may imply that Spurs dominated and peppered Fulham throughout, which was not the case. Harry Redknapp's side threatened only in fits and starts and if his board had not already accepted their manager's argument of the need for a fourth striker, they would have done after this match.

Crucially perhaps from Hodgson's perspective, Fulham also continued their unbeaten run without Jimmy Bullard. The midfield player limped off in the 37th minute but had been struggling from the third minute with a dead leg. Fulham's success this season has focused on Hangeland and Bullard and while Hodgson as been at pains to understate their influence, the consensus has been that without them his side would falter. So, here was evidence that, as Hodgson put it, “the rest are not bit-part players”.

Redknapp remained upbeat but bemoaned the difficulty that he is finding in accommodating Luka Modric in a formation that will reap goals. Redknapp was full of praise for Bobby Zamora's ability at holding up the ball. “I wish he was still at Tottenham,” Redknapp said of the Fulham forward who had a brief spell at White Hart Lane five years ago. If he cannot wrest Craig Bellamy away from West Ham United, maybe Hodgson will be fending off a bid for yet another player.

It was a match of cameo performances, most of them coming in the first half, with both goalkeepers taking centre stage. Schwarzer dived low to his right to pull off one of the saves of the season in denying Aaron Lennon's fierce shot on the half-volley. The chance was created by an error from Bullard, whose sloppy pass allowed Benoît Assou-Ekotto to launch a counter-attack. Shortly afterwards Bullard limped off because of a dead leg with his manager looking distinctly unsympathetic - but then Hodgson rarely exudes bonhomie on the touchline.

At the other end the Spurs goalkeeper repaid the “We love you Gomes” song from the home fans with a fine save from Clint Dempsey's overhead kick. It helped that an earlier tame shot from Dempsey had been gathered calmly by him. Heurelho Gomes could yet end up the club's player of the season if he continues to exhibit fewer and fewer gaffes. “For £10 million he should be half-decent,” Redknapp added.

Dempsey's acrobatic effort came courtesy of a dreadful pass out of defence from Ledley King. It was one of those games; briefly sour then briefly sweet. A burst of pace from Lennon led only to a wasted overhit ball. A swerving run from Modric that deceived Danny Murphy and Aaron Hughes deserved a goal but the Croatia player's shot sailed too high. Modric might have done better, too, in the 65th minute when Assou-Ekotto delivered a ball with pace from the left that the playmaker headed well wide.

Roman Pavlyuchenko's arrival in the 72nd minute lifted an increasingly dispirited home crowd and his first touch was an attempt at goal that took a deflection and could have gone anywhere; but Fulham - even without Hangeland who had a 24-hour bug - have a blessed as well as organised defence.

In the 85th minute Andrew Johnson seemed poised to give Fulham the lead but the forward stumbled under pressure from King, allowing Gomes a more simple save than he probably expected. Redknapp's team remain too close to the relegation zone for their own liking but he reiterated that the league is congested - just as the pitch was yesterday for his forwards.
