Summer Bird, the other son of Birdstone in the race, rallied wide into the stretch and ran down the embattled trio of Dunkirk, Mine That Bird, and Charitable Man to win Saturday's $1 million Belmont Stakes by 2 3/4 lengths under Kent Desormeaux.
Summer Bird, trained by Tim Ice, ran the 1 1/2 miles in 2:27.54 on a fast track.
Dunkirk set the pace, battled back on the inside through the stretch and edged 6-5 favorite Mine That Bird for second by a neck. Charitable Man, a slight second choice over Dunkirk at 9-2, was steadied between horses at the sixteenth pole when Dunkirk drifted out briefly, and finished fourth. Following an inquiry, the order of finish was unchanged.
Mine That Bird, also a son of Birdstone, made a strong wide run to vie for the lead in the stretch.
"I made the lead at the sixteenth pole and I thought I was home free," said Calvin Borel, who was seeking an unprecedented sweep of the Triple Crown on two different horses. "We'll get 'em next time."
Summer Bird paid $25.80 to win as fifth choice in the field of 10. The exacta paid $121; the trifecta paid $295.00; and the superfecta paid $852.
The Brooklyn Handicap-Belmont Stakes double, linking Eldaafer with Summer Ice, paid $337.50.
Summer Bird anchored a $1 million guaranteed pick four that paid $17,085; the pool was $2,243,069, a Belmont Stakes-day record.
The $1 million guaranteed pick six returned $969,345.
