Serbia and Montenegro go beyond Terzic's wildest dreams
Head coach of Serbia and Montenegro, Zoran Terzic
November 7, Nagoya: Serbia and Montenegro coach Zoran Terzic says his giant-killing team have come of age in the 2006 World Championships.
The Balkan side, playing in the world's top competition for the first time in 28 years, stunned defending champions Italy with a gutsy 3-1 opening night win.
And Terzic's team haven't looked back since.
The eastern Europeans added another big-name scalp in their next match against Cuba, before coming from two sets down to get the better of Peru and seal qualification for the second round.
Serbia and Montenegro made short work of Egypt in their fourth match, and rounded off a fairytale start to the tournament with a commanding straight sets victory over Turkey.
Terzic has been pleasantly surprised by the cool head his young team have shown in their matches.
"One of the main reasons for our five wins was the quality of our team," he said.
"In this tournament it is impossible to win without that.
"We have had a great collective spirit and huge motivation, but we have also shown a level of maturity which we didn't have before.
"I am happy that I have had the chance to work with my team since they were very young, and you can see how far they have come by the results."
Terzic and his team have been playing down their achievements throughout the competition, but he knows they can be a match for anyone on their day.
"We are coming into the second round happy that we could play as we did," he said.
"We will try to do our best to play well again in the second round, and we would be very pleased if we can do that. That is the reason we came here.
"I believe the results will come if we play like we did in the first round, but we will be playing against strong opposition, and the most important thing we have to do is to play our best.
"What we can say for sure is that in the first round we did what we couldn't even dream of doing."
