Queensland Confirmed for Rally Australia
A brief statement from the Australian motorsport federation CAMS has
confirmed that an agreement has been made with a company called IQG
Rally Events Australia Pty Ltd to act as promoter of the Australia
Round of the FIA World Rally Championship. Subject to the event being
placed on the FIA calendar, the event will move from its present
location in Western Australia to a "new permanent location within 50
kms of Brisbane", with the Promoter "ready to conduct the event from
2007".
This news was first announced on 23 August on the official website
of the Australian Rally Championship, timed to coincide with the
meeting of the organiser's working group of the World Rally
Championship Commission in Paris. After many months of missed schedules
for news about the future of the event, this announcement, however
brief, has come as a great relief to Australian enthusiasts, currently
concerned about the health of Australian rallying.
The announcement that the event would be based so close to Brisbane
has raised many queries about the proposed base location for the rally.
The only one which initially appears to be appropriate is Caboolture,
which lies to the north of Brisbane, about 80km from Imbil, in the
heart of Queensland's traditional rallying territory.
The most significant aspect of this announcement is that the
planning for the event appears to be independent of governmental
support. Full details of plans are expected to be released during the
Telstra Rally Australia held at the end of October in Perth.
