Mili Poljičak crowned his dream week at the Split Open with his first Challenger title!
Mili Poljičak crowned a dream week at the Jolly Autoline Challenger Split Open on Sunday, the 21-year-old Split tennis player celebrated the biggest moment of his young career in his own backyard after defeating German Tom Gentzsch in the final with 6:4, 6:4. Thus, in the sixth edition of the Split Open, the tournament welcomed its first domestic winner, it was arranged that Mili played for – Mila Moralić, a woman who was a big part of this tournament, and who suddenly passed away a few weeks ago, and in her memory, her husband, tournament director Ismar Moralić, dedicated this edition of the tournament. This is Mili's first title at the Challenger level, his greatest success so far. Third – luck, he lost the previous two finals, in Zagreb (2022) and Targu Mures (2025) when he was injured and had to surrender.
The two-time Split Open winner (on Saturday he won the doubles match with Slovak Miloš Karol) outplayed Gentzsch in one hour and 38 minutes in very demanding conditions, as a strong bora was blowing and creating serious problems for the finalists. Mili definitely adapted better and gained his first tangible advantage with a break for 5:4 in the first set. In the second, Poljičak and Genzsch exchanged breaks for 2:1 and 2:2, and the denouement came again in the ninth game. Gentzsch gave in once again, losing his serve, while Mili held his serve for the match in which he was coming back from 0:30. Our tennis player had four more winners (23-19) and made much fewer mistakes (15-32).
– A demanding match, demanding conditions. I think I showed more in the crucial moments. I was calm the whole time. This was third time lucky for me, where I grew up and I'm glad it happened in front of my people. This was my best week in my senior career – said the former junior Wimbledon winner.
