Serbian teenager Novak Djokovic won his first Masters title as he defeated Guillermo Canas 6-3 6-2 6-4 to take the Sony Ericsson title in Miami.

The 19-year-old didn't drop a solitary set in the whole tournament and was only ever broken once during the week.

Canas, who knocked Roger Federer out of the last two events, couldn't break Djokovic's serve during the match, but did compete gamely in an entertaining final that was closer than the scoreline suggested.

In his first Masters final against Rafael Nadal in Indian Wells last week, Djokovic suffered from nerves near the start of the match and lost the first four games.

No such aliment overcame him in Miami as he started confidently and he broke to love in the fourth game of the match.

Canas however, was incensed that he was called for a foot fault, to such an extent that he unsuccessfully pleaded with the umpire to remove the lineswoman who made the call.

With Djokovic's serve in such fine fettle the teenager was able to then close out the first set 6-3.

Canas was then again punished in an early service game in the second set as he was broken to 15 in the fifth game to put Djokovic 3-2 in front.

Canas nearly broke back the very next game, but a successful challenge by Djokovic saw what would have been a game winning point replayed; and then, after an amazing eight deuces, Djokovic finally closed out the game.

He then quickly polished off the set to take a 2-0 lead, with a stunning array of shots.

Whenever a long rally developed, it always seemed that Djokovic had the edge, as he was able to completely change the pace of any exchange, by either unleashing a powerful forehand down the line, or else by executing a sublime drop shot. He also showed soft hands at the net all afternoon.

By the third set Canas was struggling with a hamstring injury and had treatment on more than one occasion but he was hanging in there until a double fault on a break point at 4-4 allowed Djokovic serve for the match.

After going 30-0 in front in the final game, Djokovic next produced a double fault and a nervy long forehand to bring it back to 30-30; but then, the Serb produced two fine forehands to clinch the championship.

"In a final nothing is easy especially when you are playing a great player like Guillermo," Djokovic said on court after the match.

"He has been through a tough period, but he has come back from suspension and in just a few months he has returned to the top of the game.

"His fans really got behind him but thanks to all the Serbian fans, it was great to see all the flags, I'm so proud to win this for my country."
