ATP - US Open - The US Open is played on medium/fast Decoturf hard courts and they use the faster (than PENN) Wilson Extra Duty balls. After the tournament in 2000, the US Tennis Association officials felt that the Decoturf at the National Tennis Center in New York was too fast. They slowed it down for 2001 and made a further adjustment in 2003. The 90's saw fast-court loving serve & volley players such as Sampras, Edberg, Rafter, Philippoussis, Rusedski, Bjorkman & Todd Martin go well, but most recent years have seen baseline/counter-punching types such as Agassi (62-15), Hewitt (38-7), Nalbadian (16-6), Ginepri (10-7), Ferrero (15-8) and Davydenko (10-6) score plenty of success. Federer (32-4) has dominated this event for the previous three years and along with Roddick (25-6) and Youhzhny (11-5) last year, showed that the surface takes slice and that it can be an effective play. This is the only Grand Slam event that settles fifth set deciders with a tie-break.

The U.S. Open hired a security firm run by a former New York City police commissioner, to set up a whistle-blower hotline and is taking other steps to make sure it doesn't wind up with a gambling scandal this year.
