Damjan Rudez, a Croatian shooting specialist, has reportedly signed with the Cavaliers today, via David Pick of eurobasket.com. Rudez is a 27 year old stretch 4, listing in at 6’10” and weighing 201 pounds.
Rudez, in just 24 minutes per game, averaged 10.7 ppg, but only averaged 1.9 rpg this season in the Spanish ACB league team CAI Zaragoza and in the Euroleague this season. He shot 44.1 percent from 3-point land in ACB play, and 51.9% in Eurocup play.
His concern is his rebounding ability and his weight. At only 201 pounds at 6’10”, that is alarming for any big man, a huge concern for why the Cavs didn’t draft Nerlens Noel in 2013 (in addition to injury concerns). To average less than 2 rpg for a near 7 footer is alarming. The Cavs may try to fit him in at the small forward position, where he would fit better.
In watching film today on Rudez, he is a pure shooter. This Cavs team last season desperately needed a consistent shooter on the court to help space the floor for Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters to penetrate and facilitate.
The Cavs were also 4th worst in the NBA in team field goal percentage, shooting only 43.7% last season. They could’ve used CJ Miles, but he was injured most of the time. Sergey Karasev is a project, and they are hoping big things from him this year, but last year he was not NBA ready. This year, they are hoping big things from Rudez.
With Damjan’s height and shooting ability, he adds depth to a young roster, but also will make slashers like Kyrie and Dion better, giving them more space to operate. Defense may be a problem for the stretch big man, but hey, the Cavs don’t play it anyways.
They are still working out a deal, but reports confirm he will sign with the Cavaliers. I like the signing. Damjan will need some time too to develop in the NBA, so although he is 27, he needs to be treated like a rookie by the fans, meaning don’t expect huge contributions right away. However, despite adjusting to the speed of the NBA, shooting comes natural. The Cavs needed it last year, and they are hoping Rudez will help the Wine & Gold with spacing and shooting this coming season.
