Top 10 Biggest Surprises of the NBA season

10. Andrea Bargnani looking legit

It's been six years, but Bargnani is starting to play like the 2006 No. 1 draft pick. However, his strong season start suffered a setback with a strained calf against the Kings. Through 11 games, Bargnani is averaging 22.3 ppg and a career-best 6.5 rebounds.

9. Heat PGs stepping up
Miami's point guards have answered the call thus far. Rookie Norris Cole (left) has shown early what he's capable of, scoring 20 points in the second game of the season. Through 12 games, he’s averaging 9.8 ppg and 3.3 assists. Mario Chalmers (right) is playing more aggressively and has come up clutch for the Heat. He's averaging 11.9 ppg and 4.3 assists.

8.Ryan Anderson shooting lights out
Anderson has had the magic touch behind the arc for Orlando, shooting 43.4 percent from three-point range. After averaging 8.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in his first three seasons in the league, he’s boosted those numbers to an impressive 17.2 ppg and 7.3 rebounds so far this season.

7.Kyrie Irving's impressive start
Last year's top draft pick is living up to expectations so far this season. Irving has put together a string of four consecutive 20-point performances for Cleveland. The rookie is shooting 47.3 percent from the field and leads the team with 17 ppg and 5.1 assists.

6.Kobe remains focused
A tumultuous offseason that included injuries and a divorce haven't broken Bryant's spirits on the court. He continues to prove capable of winning a few more titles. At 33 years old, Kobe's still going strong with four straight 40-plus point outings and currently leads the league in scoring at 31.2 ppg.

5.Pacers a contender
Indiana sits in second place in the Central Division behind Chicago at 9-3 for their best start in seven years. They've reaffirmed their presence in the East with another drubbing of the Celtics. Seven players have scoring averages in double figures with Danny Granger leading the charge at 14.7 ppg.

4.Ray Allen better than ever
Allen will turn 37 this year, but he continues to be the sharp shooter he's always been. Only an illness slowed him down briefly and kept him out of the Celtics' game against the Nets. He hasn't shown any signs of a letdown since his return, shooting a career-high 54.5 percent from the field and 59.2 percent from beyond the arc.

3.LeBron's post game
James has finally learned to play in the paint. His perimeter play and development of his post game, which had been absent throughout his career, will make him nearly unstoppable. He's shooting 57.8 percent from the field, averaging 29 ppg, 8.2 rebounds and 7.4 assists. However, LeBron's free throw shooting is still a work in progress. A 9-for-17 night from the line proved costly in the Heat’s overtime loss to the Clippers.

2.Ricky Rubio living up to hype
Rubio has given Minnesota fans plenty to cheer about early this season. His dazzling and flashy play has brought a spark to the Twin Cities. He averaged just 5.9 ppg, 3.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists in his final two years in Spain, but in his first season with the Wolves he is shooting 46 percent from the field and averaging 10.4 ppg and 8.0 assists.

1.76ers' hot start
It's been Philadelphia early this season instead of New York looking like it can challenge the Boston Celtics for the Atlantic Division crown. After a 1-2 start, the 76ers have won eight of their last nine for their best start since the 2000-2001 season. They’re also 5-0 at home and winning there by an average of 25.2 points. Spencer Hawes along with six other Sixers are averaging more than 10 ppg.

Rubio is a rambler and a gambler playing D, too

Through his first 12 games, Rubio is eighth in the league in assists (8.3 per game) and tied for sixth in steals (2.0 per game), numbers that clearly make him the leader among rookies in each category.

Already, New Orleans coach Monty Williams suggests Rubio, once he fills out that scrawny body these next few years, could, because of his height and those arms, redefine a position at which he has been compared a time or two to the man who last redefined it, two-time league MVP Steve Nash.

"He defends better than Nash, better than most point guards coming into the league right away," Williams said. "I watch him on film and he has been surprising because I didn't think he was that good, I didn't think he'd be that good this early. He's going to fill into that body and he'll be able to guard some 2s [shooting guards], maybe even some 3s [small forwards]. He could very well change that position."

"He has exceeded a lot of people's expectations," said Washington and former Wolves coach Flip Saunders. "There were a lot of question marks coming over, and he has done a really, really, really good job. He's a good rookie, but he's not an All-Star yet."

At 21, Rubio is an NBA rookie who played his first Spanish pro game in 2005 and started in the Olympics three years later at age 17 -- "I don't consider him a rookie," Williams said -- but even his new coach didn't know what to expect on the defensive end.

"Everybody told me he had great hands," Adelman said. "What I really like about him is he's not afraid to challenge people, not afraid to get in there. That's half the battle. He's a lot more solid than we thought, very good at [defensive] rotations, very good at getting back and being in the right spot. Of all our guys, he has probably done that as well anybody.

"He has got a real basketball IQ. He really understands the game."
