Are Pistons fans so jaded that they're honestly upset about an all-star caliber talent signing for a reasonable 13 million per year?
Take a look at a list of NBA player contracts, and look who's getting paid in the same range as Smith, none of them are significantly better, but a lot are worse.
Smith's only hole is the shooting. He needs to cut out the long twos entirely, and get his three point shooting up to at least 35%, and things will be just fine.
Additionally, he provides an insurance policy for Monroe. If Moose can't play the PF, Detroit can comfortably trade him for an elite PG and/or SF and just slide Smith next to Dre for an ultra athletic defensive front court. If Smith doesn't fit, his age and contract are appealing enough to move him for a valuable asset.
There wasn't any ideal free agents for the Pistons this year. A perfect fit just didn't exist. Whether you like Smith or not, you may as well be optimistic, he's going to be here for a couple years at least.
And one more thing- at least Smith has a history of being a good player. That's more than we could say prior to the Villanueva signing.
Have faith, my Piston lovin bro'...
