Tactical analysis: the Bayern passing that killed Schalke

Bayern Schalke analysis: whether they were watching the game or actually putting Bayern under pressure, the Reds’ passing game absolutely killed the Royal Blues on Saturday. Among other things, Robben was made central to the Bavarian tactics.
Tactical points
Schalke lined up its players defensively, playing very conservative football with little pressure. Kroos, Schweinsteiger and Thiago had plenty of space before the last third of the pitch, but they had to build plays patiently to avoid being intercepted.

On the left side of Schalke’s defence, Kolasinac and Matip were the targets of Bayern’s runs and passes for a good part of the game. The following early play shows how Rafinha found Robben on the right wing, and the Dutchman would outrun his opponent and create a scoring chance.

Toni Kroos had another excellent game and he also went for Robben on the right. The winger’s pace combined with the accuracy of the passes drilled giant holes in the Schalke defence. On the following play, the ball is going towards him to go behind the defence. Julian Draxler had to track back to stop him.

Schalke only realized what was going on when they were down 0:2. They stepped up the pressure to reduce the amount of time Bayern had to make plays.

But that didn’t stop the hosts. FCB shifted gears to give itself a split second advantage. On the following play, Thiago seems covered, but he gets ready to relay the ball to Götze, who would go on a run to threaten the Schalke keeper.
About to be cooked
Robben sometimes drifted left to do the same thing. On the following play, he does just enough to escape his mark and send Alaba down the left wing.

Schalke had a few good moments in the first half but Bayern responded with good defensive work. On the following, the Reds were beaten on a run, but they tracked back very quickly, only leaving a shooting option to the shoot straight to Neuer, who found it easy to save.
Clear, but soon with only the option to send it to the middle.
Schalke sometimes wanted to surprise Bayern but defenders overloaded the middle and the area, forcing the pass towards the wing.

But then, Javi didn’t give them a chance, making a perfect tackle.

Schalke’s left flank was so weak that Goretzka had to do the same thing than Draxler. The winger came back to defend, only to see Robben beating him one on one.
Here I go again
Bayern’s defence was more robust. Once again, the middle was overloaded with players, making it hard to penetrate the area to get anywhere near Neuer.
We’re back
Remember how Franck Ribéry and Robben worked like madmen to defend last season? It is clear that the team was instructed to do that again and Arjen answered.
Reminiscent of 2013
Bayern did make a mistake here and there, though. As they did last week, defenders (in this case Javi) went a bit too high, leaving space for a pass behind them. On this play, Schweinsteiger has to challenge Draxler to prevent a good scoring chance.

How Bayern scored
I won’t comment the first goal. It was just an unlucky deflection for Schalke on Alaba’s free kick. Nothing that reflected a plan or weakness.
First Robben goal. Taking advantage of Schalke’s weak left side once again. Mandzukic pivots and passes to the Dutchman who sprints forward. He will chip it past the advancing keeper.

Mandzukic goal. You should never allow Luigi to have a free header. Never. Never. Alaba’s perfect high cross was obviously going to be converted.
“I’ve scored harder goals”
Second Robben goal. That was mistake by a Schalke defender. When Robben is in his favourite shooting position on the right wing, you have to challenge him more aggressively. He was given enough space to beat Fährmann, in deadly fashion.
Too late
Third Robben goal on a penalty. A gift from Kevin Prince Boateng, who surprised his teammates by passing back unexpectedly, forcing a foul on Mandzukic in the area.
Good luck
Statistical points
My man of the match
Arjen Robben. Three goals out of 7 shots. Six dribbles. Two passes created scoring chances. 60 runs. Greatness.
Toni Kroos
93% passing rate for the whole team. Toni Kroos matched that percentage by completing 133 passes and 19 accurate long balls!
Mario Mandzukic
One goal. Five shots on target, some of them saved brilliantly by Fährmann.
Bastian Schweinsteiger
The boss may not be peaking yet, but he was rather solid with his passes in central midfield.

Thiago
Four key passes, three tackles, three dribbles. Three accurate crosses out of 5 attempts. Won 15 challenges.
Javi
Still doing well in central defence. Five interceptions. He was dominant on the right side, as you can see on his dashboard below. Green circles are effective clearances.
