Bayern – Guangzhou preview, testing the untested dragon

Mission 5. FC Bayern wants to win the Club World Cup and it has to defeat Guangzhou Evergrande, currently the best team in Asia, in the semi-final. The dragons have yet to be tested against the best of Planet Football.
Guangzhou, real estate money and latin attack
Injuries: none
Who is Guangzhou? That club has quite a recent history. It was involved in a match fixing scandal in 2009, but also taken over by real estate giants Evergrande. The company injected money in the team to buy players.
The Chinese side acquired attacking midfielder Gao Lin and defensive midfield Zhi Zheng. Drawing from Latin America to boost the attack, they purchased Brazilian attacking midfielder Muriqui and Argentinian playmaker Dario Conca, who was the best player in the Brazilian league.
Such moves are not unfamiliar. Players like Didier Drogba also moved briefly to China for big money.
As a result, Guangzhou topped the Chinese league in 2011 for the first time, with a 15-point lead. Coach Marcello Lippi arrived a year later to build on that, driving the team to a win in the Asian Champions League final this year. We know Lippi very well. He was coaching the Italian national team when it won the World Cup in 2006 in Germany, defeating our favourites in the semi-finals.
Guangzhou won the league in 2013 with an 18-point lead.
On to the pitch.
Lippi is more likely to field a 4-2-3-1 that attacks vertically, although he sometimes uses 4-3-3 or 4-4-2.
Conca is the creative force with great footwork, accurate low passes and a fast shot. He has attacking midfielders Muriqui to his left and Gao to his right. Brazilian striker Elkeson is the #9, a natural scorer with a quick release, as well as accurate one-timers and headers in the area. He loves to draw a heart with his hands after a goal. He’s good, but many of his goals can be prevented even by the average Bundesliga team.
The Asian champs do not have incredible pace, but their passing generally is good. Conca and his friends feed throughballs and crosses to Elkeson in the middle. Muriqui is the fastest attacker of his group. He can thread the needle in the area, but mostly, can control most passes and go down the wing to challenge the keeper with a very good shot.
All these guys can work in tight spaces, with supporting runs by Zhang Linpeng at right-back.
Can their defence hold up? Their own players have admitted, in November, that their defending was “loose”. Guangzhou is used to possession and attacking, not to German or European sides. In their quarter-final against Al Ahly, goalkeeper Yang sent a clearance directly to an attacker but escaped punishment. Do that with Mandzukic in front of you and the ball with end up in the net.
Possible lineup
Guangzhou Evergrande FC (4-2-3-1)
Zeng
Zhang, Feng, Kim, Sun
Huang, Zheng
Gao, Conca, Muriqui
Elkeson
Bayern, weary but on a mission
Injuries: Robben, Schweinsteiger, Badstuber
FC Bayern may be tired after a first half of the season plagued with injuries. Pep Guardiola was not given the chance to rotate his players as much as he would have liked. The result is a team with a great record, but tired legs and sometimes weak focus. You can’t blame it on lack of good will, though.
The boys are looking forward to this one. Pep admitted that the Club World Cup was on their mind when playing against Hamburg on Saturday. The thought of winning a fifth major title in the same calendar year is a most attractive one.
Facing Guangzhou means visiting previously unknown territory, although there is no mystery to their formation and playing style. If I found out about it, there is no doubt that Pep has watched video tapes of their recent games.
I think that Bayern should go into this semi with plenty of confidence, knowing that their Chinese opponents will struggle greatly without the ball. They probably have been dominated by a possession-based team that sends relentless waves of attacks forward. Compact defence is not familiar to them and the Reds can look forward to put them under a stress test.
Who should play? We have yet to hear about Javi Martinez, who was left out of the squad on Saturday due to shoulder problems. If he is not available, you can bet on Philipp Lahm handling the defensive midfield, which he did well this weekend. That would put Rafinha at right-back to face Muriqui, which is a bit of a worry with his pace and creativity.
I would love to see Xherdan Shaqiri starting on the right wing, although I am not expecting it. He had an impact and he hit the target in only 12 minutes on Saturday. He is more natural than Thomas Müller on the wing.
Bayern has enough weapons to take these guys down. It’s just a matter of execution.
A prediction? Bayern should win this game by three goals.
Possible lineup
FC Bayern (4-1-4-1)
Neuer
Rafinha, Boateng, Dante, Alaba
Lahm
Müller, Götze, Kroos, Ribéry
