The other side of Bavaria: Nürnberg – Bayern (preview)

Bayern take on fellow Bavarian side Nürnberg tomorrow for the 20. Bundesliga spieltag. With the prospect of extending our unbeaten run to 45 games, we give you a small tactical preview for the game tomorrow.

Nürnberg: picking themselves up

The Baby Bavarians made the news in the first round of the Bundesliga this season, and not exactly for the right reasons. Nürnberg failed to secure a win during the entire first round, thereby making fools of themselves, since they’re not exactly a horrible team, a la Braunschweig. This is a team that finished 10th last year, which admittedly isn’t a stellar finish, but is leagues ahead of what they’re producing this year.

In the Rückrunde, however, they’ve managed to pick themselves up, amassing four unbeaten games and finally crawling out of the relegation pit after beating Hertha Berlin. But they’re still level on points with Freiburg, and the risk of relegation hasn’t been remotely thwarted.

On with the tactics; Nürnberg favor, like many of their Bundesliga peers, the 4-2-3-1 system. The twist here is that the entire squad revolves not around the holding midfielders, but around offensive midfield anchor Hiroshi Kiyotake. Let’s be blunt with this: having your team revolve around the guy who is already supposed to be the offensive orchestrator of the attack is a mistake. But Kiyotake is Nürnberg’s most active man, and as shown by this picture, courtesy of Four Four Two, 

Unlike many offensive anchors, Kiyotake’s area of influence clearly begins in the second quarter of the pitch, where the holding midfielders are supposed to be king. This is very strange, and although I haven’t particularly followed Nürnberg this season, I think it’s part of the explanation why these guys have only managed to score 24 goals this year. With your no. 10 busy making passes in the very middle of the field, there is a hole in the attacking third and fourth. The wingers are forced to close down spaces, or the striker is forced to fall back. The result? Total tactic chaos. This team is thereby disordered, which would go a long way in accounting for their terrible season so far.

Bayern: the home stretch starts now

The tricky part of the season for Bayern, and any other team that is still going in the Champions League, and has hopes of attaining a domestic title, starts now. With the CL Round of 16 just around the corner, and the definitive stages of the Pokal not that far off ahead, the first team regulars will be starting to feel the pressure at any given moment.

It’ll be interesting to see how Bayern will line up with Basti potentially making a comeback, and Javi nearing his hour as well. Ribéry will be out, having undergone minor rear-end surgery.

Get the picture? We’ll probably have an interesting offensive midfield line tomorrow. I reckon hope Guardiola will line up like this:

I think that Kroos will be contesting his spot with Thiago, especially given the recent controversy surrounding his contract renewal talks. Guardiola takes no crap from anybody, as proven by his hardball tactics, and he won’t hesitate to leave Kroos on the bench to make him reconsider his declarations. That said, Toni is a player of tremendous quality, and it would also be stupid to leave him out indefinitely.

Expectations

A win, naturally. The previous game wasn’t a landslide (2:0), but we shouldn’t have too much problems IF we play with attitude.
