Hamburg Bayern preview: meeting the Bundesliga hopefuls

Hamburg Bayern preview: what should be a one-sided match in the DFB Pokal should bring forth a clear winner, the Bavarians from Munich.

Hamburg, survival mode

Hamburger SV, who previously were one of the better sides in the Bundesliga, have now closed in on relegation. They only accumulated 16 points up to now, so it is obvious who the clear favorites are. However, on Wednesday it won’t be a Bundesliga match, it will be a cup match so anything can happen, especially after fans attacked their own players. They will be eager to prove that they do have heart.

Hamburg’s danger men

Hamburg will go into the match depending on four key players. Pierre-Michel Lasogga, Rafael van der Vaart, Jonathan Tah and Marcell Jansen. The former two will be heavily depended on to go forward, while the latter two will surely be relied upon to make the slaughter seem less extreme.

The problem is, while Jonathan Tah is an excellent defender, he is extremely young and I feel like he should not be depended on in such a vital and crucial game. Marcell Jansen is the more experienced defender, and has to do his best to support Tah keep a calm and collected mind.

Lasogga is Hamburg’s main striker, a classic goal poacher with good finishing skills. He will have to take his chances in this game to keep his team in the running. I believe that he will be forgiven if he fails, as he is normally one of the few players that regularly show up. Van der Vaart, on the other hand, is such an important part of Hamburg’s game that he has to create chances or will be criticized. HSV needs his passing and set-piece ability to shine.

What Hamburg has to do

It really is a game that Hamburg didn’t need. Their aim now is not just to beat Bayern Munich to progress in the Pokal, but also to prove to their fans that they are still a fantastic team. Let’s see how that turns out.

Hamburg will have to counter Bayern, which they have failed to do in the earlier this season. Since Pep will likely play Thiago and Kroos in the midfield, the hosts have to be physical and press high up the field, as FC Nürnberg did this weekend. Hamburg’s problem will be Bayern’s constant threat when pressing forward throughout the match, especially with a defense that hasn’t been performing anywhere near its potential.

On Monday, the club has announced that Franck Ribéry will be missing for a few weeks after picking up a buttocks injury that required minor surgery. In that context, we are likely to see either Arjen Robben, Mario Götze or Xherdan Shaqiri deputizing on the left wing.

Since this is a cup match against one of the weakest top flight sides in Germany, the Bavarians could go ahead with a B-team on Wednesday without risking a loss. HSV are in poor form and Bayern’s squad players still pack a punch. This could be the occasion to give playing time to many guys (Shaqiri, Pizarro, Starke, van Buyten) who have been underused so far this season. And resting players such as Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer without major risks.

What Bayern needs to do

FCB’s 9:2 victory last season should be their blueprint to this match. Whether you like tiki taka or not, the endless passing system has been designed to find faults with the opponents defense and exploit them. Hamburg’s defense has been very very shaky this season Patient passing and physical play are most likely to set up the table for a one-sided slaughter. Or at least a comfortable win.
