Analysis: how Bayern dismantled a sitting-back Hamburg

Hamburg Bayern analysis: how can you go wrong and struggle when your opponent doesn’t pressure you that much? FC Bayern was truly solid throughout their 5:0 win, playing a great game of position against a team that was sitting back, although I spotted a couple of mistakes here and there.

Tactical points

Some still believe that we are playing a 4-1-4-1 formation, despite a clear pattern with two central midfielder since the beginning of 2014. The following screenshot should enlighten them. The only variations we saw during the game has been Philipp Lahm sometimes going left, then Thiago and Toni Kroos swapping positions on the right.

Despite total domination and ball possession in the first 15 minutes, it was not always easy to create a scoring chance. Look at how Hamburg was sitting back and waiting to defend, hoping for a mistake by the Reds. Well, in the case, the blue shirts.

Mario Mandzukic didn’t just score a hat trick during this game. He helped confuse the Hamburg defence by roaming a bit more freely than usual. Sometimes he was on the right. Sometimes, as seen below, he pulled back.

Opponents should also be wary of our central defenders, who contribute a lot more to the offensive effort than you could imagine. Just below, look at how Boateng intervenes by going forward to launch a fresh attack, just as Hamburg should have taken the ball forward.

As if a recent Dante header goal in the Bundesliga wasn’t enough of a warning, HSV failed to understand that you have to cover him on set pieces. In tricky fashion, he found a way to remain free.

On to a couple of mistakes that could have been avoided.

First, Arjen Robben didn’t play his best half. On the following play, he tried to shoot the ball although he was not in the best position to do so. Passing would have been a better option than greed.

Right after the restart, Hamburg had a good occasion to bring the ball forward and threaten goal because Boateng misjudged a high ball.

It was slick ball control that allowed Robben to score his goal. Look how he maneuvered to take the pass when being covered closely by a defender after bursting forward to receive a pass.

When brought on to replace Boateng, Javi Martinez became a virtual central defender. With Dante in the middle and full-backs going wide, this provided a chance for Javi to practice at that position in a comfortable setting. This is much better than starting against a tougher opponent.

Do you remember Bayern fans shaking their heads when Pep Guardiola was playing a 4-1-4-1 and saying that he only had one defensive midfielder earlier this season, while sticking with Bastian Schweinsteiger as an attacking midfielder? When the vice-captain was given his first run in several months on Wednesday, that definitely was a part of the past. Basti settled in the middle of the pitch, taking control of the game very quickly. Right where he belongs.

Dante’s form keeps improving. In a situation that could have led to a direct goal, he served up a perfect tackle on the ground. Beauty.

Being a striker doesn’t just mean getting in the right position for a goal. Look at how Mandzukic chested the ball down to Kroos for a shot there. I love this.

Schweinsteiger brings much more to the table than just running around. Look at this long pass to the right, opening up space on the wing.
