Bayern power rankings, March 2014

Bayern power rankings: the team is recovering form. Several players have resumed duty in February in a renewed 4-2-3-1 formation and ratings are improving.
9.5: Toni Kroos
The man of the moment. Since he was “unbenched”, he dominated the central midfield with passing masterclasses, notably against Arsenal and Schalke. His passing rate and accuracy, as well as his timing have been nearly perfect. A pleasure to watch, this guy isn’t going anywhere. (Last month: 8)
8.5: Javi Martinez
Although central defence is not the best position for this guy, his clearing and challenging abilities have made the back four a lot more stable. Performances against Arsenal, Hannover and Schalke made him a roadblock for opponents. (Last month: unranked)
8.5: Philipp Lahm
This was a bit of a transition month for the captain. Lahm was rested a bit, not playing all the games and being subbed out twice before the 70th minute. Sometimes he lost the ball. But he partnered effectively with whoever Pep put besides him in central midfield. (Last month: 9)
8.5: Mario Götze
Deputizing for Franck Ribéry on the left wing for most of the month, he ripped Frankfurt and Hamburg to shreds. He has slowed down a bit since, with Robben and Kroos taking more space, but his importance at Bayern isn’t really diminished. (Last month: 9)
8.5: Manuel Neuer
You can’t blame him for not having a bigger rating, since his services are not always required. Yet, he came up big with saves against Schalke and Arsenal when needed. (Last month: 8)
8.5: Mario Mandzukic
Criticised by management after the winter training camp, his situation is normal again. He earned his spot as designated striker, scoring big headers and giving a lot of trouble to defences. (Last month: 8)
8.5: Thiago
Finally delivering. Those are the two words I choose to describe how Thiago has become an important at Bayern, distributing the ball with ease as the designated playmaker in a 4-2-3-1. He goes left and right to set up plays, leaving central midfield reponsibilities to Schweinsteiger, Kroos and Lahm. (Last month: 8.5)
8.5: David Alaba
Having struggled a bit defensively and not always connecting with Götze, Alaba has been storming back in the last couple of games. His crosses to Mario Mandzukic have been textbook perfection and his runs on the left flank have found space. (Last month: 8.5)
8.5: Arjen Robben
The Flying Dutchman is in the air again. Devouring Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal and scoring three goals against Schalke has reminded us why he is special. Has yet to peak, but it could be a matter of time. (Last month: unranked)
8.5: Bastian Schweinsteiger
The boss is back where he belongs: central midfield. It doesn’t matter whether Lahm or Kroos is playing by his side. Basti has played with some authority against Arsenal and Hannover, providing assists and vision in the midfield. If he avoids injuries, he will peak in the coming months. (Last month: unranked)
8: Rafinha
This stock is going up. His defensive performance is improving and his partnership with Müller and Robben on the right wing has helped Bayern to dismantle other team’s defensive left flanks. Accurate crosses have also set up Mandzukic in the area. (Last month: 7)
8: Claudio Pizarro
He knows his role as a substitute and he excels in it. Composed and experienced, he makes a smart use of space and limited time. His performance against Freiburg was terrific, with one goal and two passes that created great chances. (Last month: 7.5)
8: Thomas Müller
Limited playing time in February, due to minor injuries and squad depth. Yet, Thomas came out of nowhere to score three goals that made a difference when playing Arsenal and Hannover. Still an impact player, even when he doesn’t dominate. (Last month: 8.5)
7.5: Jérôme Boateng
Jérôme has barely played enough to be ranked this time, with Javi being involved in the CB rotation. He was solid against Hannover but shakier against Arsenal, having to concede a penalty when a mistake was made in front of him. I still consider him as our best CB overall so far but that could change. (Last month: 7.5)
7.5: Dante
Generally good in defence, what made him interesting to watch this month has been his…. headers. Two goals on set pieces in the area! (Last month: 7)
7: Xherdan Shaqiri
He was trying to do to much and failing since the restart, but he had a good match on the left wing against Freiburg, before picking up an injury. That’s a shame. (Last month: 6.5)
7: Tom Starke
He only started one game, but since the backup keeper role is very limited behind Neuer, he deserves a rating this month. With a risk-taking back four against Hannover, Starke has come up big to preserve his clean sheet, disrupting attacks by coming out and stealing the ball. (Last month: unranked)
