For me it is about togetherness, that's the only way we're going to be able to turn things around. How everyone pulls together from here on in will dictate how Hearts' season unfolds.

Individually and collectively there has to be more commitment and passion. I think that we saw that for 45 minutes against Rangers yesterday but I think there was possibly a little bit of fatigue creeping in.

Ian Black hasn't played much football lately and I think that started to show because he was a hugely influential player in the first half.

There seems to be a lot of finger-pointing going on right now but, for me, there has to be a collective responsibility.

We all have to come together and see how we can take things forward and that can be done by the captain or by any of the strong characters in the dressing-room.

If that's not going to happen then the manager will have to teach the younger players the kinds of habits and attitude that he wants from them. There's been a lot said about having to bring in experienced players, about not having the funds to buy strikers who will bring you 20 goals a season but I think it would be wrong to overlook some of the game's younger talent, the up-and-coming stars of the future.

If you look at the Dinamo Zagreb team from last week, they had seven players in their side who were aged 25 or under.

Aberdeen also played a 16 and 18-year old on Saturday and won their game convincingly, so I think that goes to prove that if the older heads in your side are not doing it for you, then look and see what the best young talent can do for you instead.

Yesterday's game showed in parts that there is still a passion there among the players – and, interestingly enough, that was without the two captains.

This is the first time that Csaba Laszlo has lost three games on the trot whilst in charge of Hearts and it will be interesting to see how he handles that pressure.

He has to wait now for people to step up to the plate and he has to hope that he has players there who have that enthusiasm and a buzz about them and the players who do emerge, just might be the younger players at the club.

The squad that Laszlo has right now is quite shallow, it's very light on numbers so he might be forced to look at the fringe players in any case to help him out.

Unfortunately for Csaba, there are still players on the wage bill who are earning far, far too much for Heart of Midlothian Football Club. I'm not saying that as a reflection on their ability or their commitment, but because Hearts simply cannot afford some of the exorbitant sums that are paid out.

All of these things have to be looked at and resolved to ensure that we turn around the recent run of results and bad fortune the club have had lately.

Fans are a credit to the club
AS a Hearts supporter who was lucky enough to have played for the club, I like to think that I understand how difficult it can be to follow your team sometimes.

I think that every single one of the fans who travelled out to Croatia for the game against Zagreb last week deserves a huge thank you from everyone involved with the club.

All of the supporters, not just the ones who flew on the official charter flight, deserve a big round of applause.

They paid out a lot of money and took the time and effort to travel out to Zagreb to watch their team play.

It was great to see the Hearts supporters there in such numbers and, despite a really disappointing result, I think that they were a credit to the club and themselves.

Hearts must overcome Europa League fatigue

AFTER striking his first Hearts goal against Rangers on Sunday, David Witteveen declared himself less than satisfied with his scoring ratio and acknowledged that tiredness is affecting the team following a hectic start to the season.
The Austrian forward opened the scoring but suffered with his colleagues as Rangers recovered to win 2-1 with a disputed late penalty. He was particularly culpable for missing a clear scoring chance in the second half, opting for a pass to the Spanis
h winger Suso instead of striking at goal.

Hearts faced Dundee United at Tannadice and Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia prior to hosting Rangers and Witteveen lamented the schedule of three games inside seven days. He admitted it had a taken a toll on the squad but stressed that it should not be employed as an excuse for defeat.

With section of the support questioning his signing and Hearts striving desperately for goals, Witteveen has resolved to continue his crusade for acceptance at Tynecastle.

"Tiredness was an issue after a tough week, but we had chances to win the game so this is no excuse," he pointed out. "We have to try and recover and be better in the next game. I'm very happy to get my first goal for Hearts but it's not so nice because we lost."

On the decision to pass to Suso instead of shooting, he remarked: "After the game when you think about it you are very angry with yourself because you made the wrong decision. Hopefully in the next game I will be sharper and make the right decisions.

"We wanted to continue in the way we played in the first half and get that second goal but we were unable to do that so we are very disappointed."

Pressure on Witteveen and his attacking associates is increasing with manager Csaba Laszlo complaining about the quality at his disposal. Christian Nade and Gary Glen are the only alternatives up front for now with Calum Elliot suffering a knee injury against Rangers.

The dearth of choice available to Laszlo was highlighted by the fact the teenage Lithuanian winger Arvydas Novikovas finished the match against Rangers playing as a central striker. The hope is that Vladimir Romanov, Hearts' majority shareholder, will see fit to invest in a potent striker before the transfer window closes on 31 August.

Witteveen, a summer signing from Red Bull Salzburg of Austria on freedom of contract, is likely to be involved on Thursday night when Hearts welcome Dinamo Zagreb to Tynecastle for the return leg of their Europa League play-off tie. Trailing 4-0 from the first match in the Croatian capital, there is scant realistic hope of the deficit being overturned but victory would at least salvage some pride for the Edinburgh club.

Witteveen sees the match as another opportunity to impress after finally breaking his duck against Rangers. "We have to try and get some confidence back in training and against Dinamo Zagreb," he continued. "We want to win that game for the supporters. We will give our best and see if it is good enough.

"Everybody wants to beat Dinamo and I am desperate to score goals. We want to win 5-0 but the main thing is that we give the supporters a show that makes them happy to see us."

Dan uoči odlaska u Edinburgh nudi svakom dinamovcu lijep osjećaj. U živopisnu škotsku metropolu modri će krenuti poneseni sjajnom pobjedom iz Maksimira, a iako uzvrat protiv Heartsa shvaćaju ozbiljno, samopouzdanja im ne nedostaje. Među modrom ekipom koja će se sutra uputiti na europski sjever je i Milan Badelj koji je na današnjoj konferenciji za novinare progovorio o svojim očekivanjima uoči uzvrata sa Škotima te o dosadašnjim rezultatima Dinama. - Puni smo optimizma, no to ne znači da nadolazeću utakmicu uzimamo zdravo za gotovo. Ozbiljno smo ju shvatili, no u svakom slučaju, nadamo se pobjedi – optimističan je mladi Dinamov veznjak te dodao kako se nada podizanju trenutnog koeficijenta Dinama, što znači da je pobjeda u koju vjeruje svakako dobrodošla. Iza modrih je nedavna utakmica sa Zadrom. Tempo u sklopu kojega se u tjednu dinamovci bore za što bolji europski rezultat, a vikendom za ponovno potvrđivanje statusa hrvatskog prvaka, ne izgleda baš lak. Novinare je zanimalo koliko takva dinamika iscrpljuje „modre“. - Tempo je takav kakav je, no ne možemo reći da nemamo vremena za odmor. Ne radi se o umoru uzrokovanom velikim ciklusom, već o umoru koji dolazi neposredno nakon utakmice. To ne znači da se ne uspijevamo pripremiti za nadolazeće susrete, jer sve se to na kraju akumulira kroz treninge. Naravno, drukčiji je tempo kad se igra svakih sedam dana, a ne svaka tri kao sad, no to nam je s druge strane i najboljha provjera te najbolji trening – smatra Badelj. Na pitanje je li se u Maksimiru radilo o lošem danu Heartsa koji se možda u Edinburghu neće ponoviti Badelj je odgovorio kako svaki protivnik igra onoliko koliko mu se dopusti. - Mi njima nismo dali da igraju, a oni nama jesu. Planovi su im se tako u svakom slučaju izjalovili, jer cijelo smo vrijeme držali utakmicu pod kontrolom. S obzirom na vrlo doru igru koju smo pokazali, mogli smo dati još više golova, no i ovo je odličan rezultat – zaključio je mladi veznjak te ujedno i mladi reprezentativac kojega i u kockastom dresu očekuju nogometne borbe. - S obzirom na našu trenutnu poziciju i kiksanje na startu kvalifikacija moramo hvatati prvo mjesto, što znači da u svaku utakmicu moramo ulaziti s namjerom da pobijedimo – istaknuo je Badelj
