The 4 teams who ended in first place and the 2 best teams among those who ended in second place in each group according to the aforementioned standards will be eligible for the next round. A ranking of the 8 teams winning the sub-groups as well as of the 4 best teams among the second classified ones will be compiled.
According to their record of achievements the 4 teams using the wild card (see Art. 3) will be placed as seeds in the Round of 16, respectively in the first, the third, the fifth and the seventh match. Their positioning in grid will be determined through a ranking based on their record of achievements in the tournament history. They will play against the top 4 second classified teams in reverse order to their respective ranking: the best wild-card team will play against the fourth best second classified team, the second best wild-card team will play against the third beast second classified team and so on.
The other clashes in the Round of 16 will be determined in the same way. The 8 group-stage winners will play each other and the top 4 resulting from the aforementioned ranking will be placed respectively in the second, the fourth, the sixth and the eighth match as seeds. The best one resulting from the aforementioned ranking will play against the eighth best one, the second best against the seventh best, the third best against the sixth best and so on.
Once the combinations are decided upon, the teams will play knockout matches. In case of a tie at the end of the regular time, the winner will be decided through penalty kicks, in conformity with Article 7 of the I.F.A.B. Association Football Rules.
