spurs transfer target ivan perisic: ten things you need to know
Croatia midfielder catching Harry Redknapp's eye
1) Midfielder Perisic, now 22, was labelled “the new Asanovic” when he emerged in his native Croatia, after former
Derby County player Aljosa Asanovic; a cultured midfielder who shone during Croatia's third-place finish at the 1998 World Cup.
2) Unlike Asanovic, Perisic is known for making thrusting bursts
into the box and is capable of scoring headed goals, as well as
finishing with his right and weaker left foot.
3) Perisic left his hometown club, Hajduk Split, at the age of 17
before he'd even kicked a ball for the first team. He was snapped up by
French side FC Sochaux in 2007.
4) The promising Perisic was pursued by PSV Eindhoven, Ajax,
Hamburg and Anderlecht while at Split, but was persuaded to join
Sochaux by former
Portsmouth manager Alain Perrin.
5) He didn't appear in the Sochaux first team either, going on
loan to Belgian side KSV Roeselare in 2009, where he played 19 games
and scored eight goals in the top flight, convincing Club Brugge to
sign him for 250,000 Euros.
6) Perisic starred in the Croatia Under-21 team's Euro 2011
qualifying group campaign. His two goals in a 2-2 draw with Serbia in
September (see video below) clinched top spot in Group 7.
7) At the end of 2010, Perisic scored eight goals in five Belgian
Jupiler League games, including three match-winners and one four-goal
haul for Club Brugge.
8) So far in the 2010/11 season, Perisic has scored 16 goals in 26
league appearances for Club Brugge, with a total of 30 goals in 77
games in all competitions since signing from Sochaux. Not bad for a
midfielder.
9) Perisic has represented Croatia at under-17, under-18 and
under-21 level, but has yet to make an appearance for Slaven Bilic's
senior side.
10) He strikes a mean dead ball, leading to comparisons with David Beckham (see the video below).
