Polonia Warszawa owner discusses Bos decision
Józef
Wojciechowski speaks of tough choice between Theo Bos and Zvonimir
Soldo; Bos to sign 2.5 year deal – but with strings attached.
Following
the announcement of Theo Bos as Polonia Warszawa's new coach today,
club owner Józef Wojciechowski spoke of a tough choice between the
Dutchman and the former 1. FC Köln coach, Zvonimir Soldo.
"I was convinced by his [Bos's] professionalism and enthusiasm. He wanted to start work immediately too.
But
I must admit I was in discussion with Zvonimir Soldo, the Croatian
coach who was working at FC Köln. I had a difficult choice... he may
well have prevailed, except that he's still being paid a salary by Köln
until June and was hesitant to come to Polonia before then," said Wojciechowski.
Wojciechowski
also revealed that he was advised on the Dutch candidate by a familar
figure – Bos's countryman, the ex-Poland coach Leo Beenhakker. Polonia's
owner has for some time been receiving the advice of Beenhakker.
2.5 year contract... or is it?
Bos
will sign a two-and-a-half year deal with his new club on Monday, but
perhaps unsurprisingly, it will include a special clause for termination
after six months.
Polonia's owner is well-known for his lack of
patience, and has already been through 13 coaches since taking over the
club in 2006. Bos is coach No.14 for Wojciechowski, and the third at
Konwiktorska already this season.
On that note, the identity of
one of Bos's assistants comes as some surprise; Bogusław Kaczmarek
rejoins the club after sensationally being sacked as coach in 2009 –
despite picking up 10 points from his four matches in charge.
Who is Theo Bos?
As
a player, Bos spent his 15-year career as a one-club man with Vitesse –
and would earn the nickname Mister Vitesse during his long stay in
Arnhem.
After hanging up his boots in 1998 he stayed at Vitesse
as a trainer of the club's youth teams, before taking up the coaching
role at Eerste Divisie outfit FC Den Bosch in 2005. Good results there
led to a return to Vitesse in January 2009, when he was chosen to
replace the dismissed Hans Westerhof.
Bos led a cash-strapped
Vitesse to 10th and 14th place finishes in the Eredivisie, but in
October 2010, following disappointing results, he was sacked by the
club's ambitious new owner Merab Jordania.
