Roma Complete Tavano Capture
AS Roma have completed the loan signing of Valencia forward Francesco Tavano. The Italian will move to the Stadio Olimpico on January 1 for the rest of the season.
After six months on the fringes of the Valencia first team, Los Che have decided to send the former Empoli forward back to Italy for six months.
The club began to look for loan deals once Quique Sanchez Flores - who looks set to continue at the helm for a while yet - made it clear that Tavano would not enter his plans even in the second half of the season.
Valencia were keen to keep him in Spain so he could familiarize himself with Spanish football, but offers from Deportivo and Racing Santander were rejected by the player and his agent, allegedly over interest from top Italian clubs.
Milan, Inter and Palermo were all reportedly interested, but Roma were the ones who realized the alleged interest with an official approach.
A deal was ironed out quickly at the Mestalla yesterday. Roma will pay his wages for the next six months, and have a purchase option that they can exercise in June, should they be willing to equal what Valencia paid Empoli in the summer.
However, Valencia sporting director Amedeo Carboni was confident Tavano had a future at the Mestalla: "He belongs to Valencia, and we are positive that he will continue, and spend quite a few years with us."
The move will provide Luciano Spalletti with much needed quality cover as Roma push for major honours in the second half of the season.
