Liverpool have agreed a deal for striker Robbie Keane to make a sensational return to former club Tottenham Hotspur.

The Republic of Ireland international only left White Hart Lane for Anfield in the summer in an £18million deal.

Keane is currently undergoing a medical in London and, provided personal terms can be agreed, will complete his move before the 5pm deadline.

A Liverpool spokesman told the club's official website: "Liverpool Football Club have reached agreement with Tottenham Hotspur for the sale of Robbie Keane."

He failed to find his feet at Anfield, scored just seven goals in 27 appearances and was often left kicking his heels on the bench by manager

We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement for the transfer of Robbie Keane back to the Club from Liverpool. Personal terms have been agreed and a medical completed.

The Irish international captain made 254 appearances in our colours in all competitions during his first spell between August 2002 and July 2008, during which time he scored 107 goals, before leaving to join Liverpool.

"We never wanted Robbie to leave in the summer, we acknowledged the six years dedicated service he gave this Club and reluctantly let him go. I am delighted that he has chosen to return to us. We can all recall the passion and fight he displayed during his previous seasons with us. I know he is determined to give us his full commitment," said Daniel Levy, Chairman.

Robbie has this to say on his return, "It was a difficult decision to make to leave Tottenham in the summer. It proved not to be the right move for me. I know some Spurs fans will feel I let them down by leaving but I can assure them I shall be giving my all for this Club - this Club has terrific fans and I want to repay them for all their support. We've got to get on and fight our way up that league table."

The 28-year-old began his professional career with Wolverhampton Wanderers where he hit 29 goals in 88 games, before making the move to Coventry City in August 1999 for a then British record fee for a teenager.

His one season at Highfield Road brought 12 goals in 34 games and earned him a move to Inter Milan the following summer. The forward spent 18 months at the San Siro before moving back to England with Leeds United following a successful loan spell, bagging 19 goals in 56 games in total during a year-and-a-half spell at Elland Road.
