Wonderful footballer though he was, Gianfranco Zola could always handle the tough stuff too, and it should not be surprising that his West Ham team have a similar streak of resilience. Having gone ahead with a strike of real quality from Diego Tristán shortly after the half-hour, the Hammers stood up to a Stoke assault under which other teams might have buckled. The result is that while City's survival celebrations are on hold for at least another game, West Ham can continue to target Europe.

"I'm very delighted," said Zola. "We knew it was going to be like that. In the first half we played some very good stuff and the goal was an example of that. In the second half we knew they would come back strong, but we were prepared and the resilience of the team is something I keep praising."

It was an absorbing match. Stoke had the ball in the net after nine minutes, when Ricardo Fuller challenged Robert Green as the West Ham goalkeeper attempted to catch a Rory Delap throw. The ball bounced free and Fuller turned it in, but the referee, Peter Walton, decided he had fouled Green.

A couple of minutes later, Walton again intervened, deciding Tristán had handled before David Di Michele shot past Thomas Sorensen, although it appeared Tristán was fouled by Ryan Shawcross when the ball hit his arm.

With Liam Lawrence and Matthew Etherington giving them natural width, Stoke were dangerous, and Abdoulaye Faye headed a Lawrence corner over from no more than six yards. But it was West Ham who took the lead when Faye gave away a free-kick around 20 yards from goal. Tristán stepped up and curled the ball across Sorensen and beyond the goalkeeper's stretching right hand.

Lawrence was distraught to have a penalty appeal turned down shortly before the break – and be booked into the bargain – but if there were fewer incidents in the second half, it was no less compelling.

Stoke hammered away and Mark Noble, on the line, prevented Faye equalising from Lawrence's corner. Deep into injury time, Fuller turned and shot just over the bar, but as the manager Tony Pulis acknowledged, this was not their day: "That's the first game we've lost at home this year and we had enough opportunities to get something out of the game. But I can't fault the players – they gave everything they had."

Zola rues red card

Gianfranco Zola was looking to the future after his side's 3-1 defeat by Everton on Saturday

Gianfranco Zola was in gracious mood after watching a game his side were in control of turned on its head by the sending off of James Tomkins.

West Ham United were a goal up and cruising before the young defender was shown a red card after tripping Tim Cahill in the penalty box. Louis Saha ensured the Hammers suffered maximum punishment by equalising for Everton from the resulting penalty before Everton added two more after the break. Despite the cruel blow, Zola was quick to move any blame away from referee Phil Dowd.

"Yes it did change the game. I was watching it on the TV and thought maybe yes, maybe no. If I was the referee maybe I was going to give the penalty but not give the red card as it was very close. Phil saw it that way, it is sad and painful but I have to accept that," Zola said.

"I thought maybe a yellow card as our player tried to get the ball and maybe the player arrived first. I don't know if it was clean contact. The referee is there and sometimes can pick up the right decisions. He certainly doesn't have the cameras we have but I have to accept it."

Zola's side had taken the lead through one of the goals of the season from Radoslav Kovac. It was the Czech international's first for the club and if he was to score 100 more it is unlikely any would better it. Kovac picked up a short pass 35 yards from goal and drilled the ball past the startled Tim Howard.

"It was a great strike. Although we didn't start the game as well as I had wanted, just before the goal we started picking up a little bit and we seemed in control of the game. The penalty changed the course of the game."

The defeat finishes any hope of West Ham qualifying for next season's UEFA Europa League. Although disappointed, Zola is proud of what he and his team have achieved in his short time with the club and is already looking forward to next season.

"I am disappointed and I told the players that. They are very disappointed but I am even more disappointed than them. We could have got the seventh place but that doesn't take anything away from the season that they played and I am proud to be their manager.

"If you consider all of the circumstances, all of the problems around the club, all of the important injuries picked up in the crucial moment of the season. Considering all of that they have done fantastic. I told them next year we are going to be much better and I do believe in that."

On a day of few positives, the return to action of striker Carlton Cole was one glimmering light. The England stiker was his usually bullish self after coming on as a half-time substitute.

"He was positive but obviously we didn't have all of the Carlton Cole at his best but he made an impact and he gave a great ball to Luis Boa Morte. But it was important to have Carlton Cole back."

Summer squad latest

West Ham United have revealed the latest first-team situation ahead of the 2009/10 campaign

03.06.2009

West Ham United can confirm Lucas Neill has rejected the offer of a new one-year contract after the release of the retained list of players for the 2009/10 season.

Following discussions in recent weeks which saw the out-of-contract defender seeking a one-year deal to take him up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the club made the 31-year-old right-back a significant offer to retain his services. However, he rejected that contract proposal this week and is pursuing other opportunities. West Ham United wish him well after two-and-a-half years' service and will focus on improving the first-team squad for the new season.

The club are working hard on a number of transfer targets for the coming campaign, having already secured many players on long-term deals. During the 2008/09 season, a dozen - all capped at various international levels - have pledged their future while highly-rated Hungary Under-21 goalkeeper Peter Kurucz has agreed a permanent four-year switch from Ujpest FC after a successful loan spell.

The 12 players were Herita Ilunga, whose own permanent transfer from Toulouse for an undisclosed fee comes into force this summer, Jack Collison, Mark Noble, Savio Nsereko, Freddie Sears, Junior Stanislas, Marek Stech, James Tomkins, Dean Ashton, Valon Behrami, Carlton Cole and Scott Parker, the new Hammer of the Year.

Diego Tristan, Lee Bowyer, Walter Lopez, Kyel Reid, Tony Stokes and Jimmy Walker are free to leave the Boleyn Ground, while Jan Lastuvka, Radoslav Kovac and David Di Michele have completed their initial loan spells and return to UEFA Cup winners Shakhtar Donetsk, Spartak Moscow and Torino respectively.

The loans of Calum Davenport and Julien Faubert to Sunderland and Real Madrid respectively will both officially end this month. Academy youngsters Jack Jeffery, Ashley Miller, Tom Harvey and Ryan O'Neill have not been offered new professional deals while Joe Widdowson has joined Grimsby Town.

The club would like to wish all the departing players well in their future careers.

Green in upbeat mood

Robert Green has spoken of his happiness at West Ham United as he looks forward to the prospect of a first competitive appearance for England this weekend.

Speaking to the England press pack ahead of Saturday's FIFA World Cup qualfier in Kazakhstan, Green was asked about his thoughts on the future after his club just missed out on European football with a very creditable ninth-place finish. "There are no problems at West Ham," he said. "I love it there and enjoy playing in front of the fans and for the manager.

"Playing football in the Premier League you are up against the best players in the world. Realistically you are getting tested every week in that respect. It's enough of a challenge in the Premier League as anywhere else."

Much of his upbeat mood can be attributed to the arrival of Gianfranco Zola, and the No1 was full of praise for the manager who has helped him in his run of 88 consecutive league appearances. "He's been a tremendous attribute to me personally, to the team and the club. It didn't take him too long to be offered a longer-term contract or improved contract.

"On a personal level, within the side it's helped that we are playing out from the defence a lot more. I feel my right leg isn't hurting so much at the end of the season because I haven't taken so many goal-kicks. We're passing it out a lot more.

"You take stock and just in flashpoints in games you receive a pass and pass it out the other side … we hadn't done that before. He's given the players the confidence to go out and do that because he has belief in the guys within the side that we can play football. That is a tremendous attribute to have for himself and the players.

"He's helped me as a player and each individual at the club. You look at someone like Carlton Cole who has come on a great deal since he's taken over. It helps that he is in the manager's old position but even for the goalkeeper, you respond to the team around you.

"If you get a back-pass and four people in your defence are wanting the ball then it's going to make you play in a more footballing manner than supposedly a guy who would look up and see ten numbers rather than faces."

Cole signed a new five-year deal in November to keep him to the Boleyn Ground until 2013 and the forward is certain there is still plenty more to come from him yet. "I've just got to keep working hard as I'm far from the finished article and I know what I need to work on and I'm going to keep on fighting tooth and nail to where I want to get to."

Harris set to calm the Upton Park chaos with £70m buyout

The chaos surrounding West Ham’s ownership is likely to be solved by a £70million American buyout brokered by football’s most prominent banker, Keith Harris, which will be completed before the start of the season.

Power banker: Keith Harris

The bankruptcy of owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson means that Icelandic bank Straumur, itself controlled by the Icelandic financial authorities after its own problems, is in the process of taking over responsibility for the club.

With debts of about £50m and a £26m compensation package due to Sheffield United over the Carlos Tevez affair, Straumur will have to accept a knockdown price or take the risk of running it themselves.

Harris, also negotiating the sale of Newcastle to a local businessman backed by foreign investors, is talking with an American corporation to bring together yet another financial package

West Ham keen on £5m-rated Rennes defender Rod Fanni to replace skipper Lucas Neill

West Ham are interested in Rennes defender Rod Fanni. The £5m-rated France international, 27, is seen as a possible replacement for Lucas Neill.

The east London club are also trailing Middlesbrough's Mathew Bates.

Meanwhile, Peterborough have missed out on securing the services of England Under 21 striker Freddie Sears.

The young Hammer will instead join Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday on a season long loan after Posh director of football Barry Fry revealed: 'He made it clear he was keen to come here, but West Ham have blocked the move and told him he has to go to Sheffield Wednesday. Obviously there was more money involved.'

Icelandic banks complete takeover of West Ham

West Hams Gianfranco Zola, Steve Clarke

West Ham have been taken over by an asset management company, CB Holdings, a subsidiary of its main creditor, the Icelandic bank Straumur.

The club had been up for sale but had been unable to find a buyer and the move to Straumur, which was reported to have been owed £100m by the West Ham owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, should safeguard their future.

The new owners have appointed one of their senior directors Andrew Bernhardt as the new non-executive chairman.

CB Holdings — the CB standing for 'Claret and Blue' — is a special purpose vehicle, created specifically to take over the running of the club. It is 70% owned by Straumur and 30% owned by three other Icelandic banks — NP, Byr and Landsbanki.

The new regime have moved swiftly to assure the Hammers manager Gianfranco Zola and his assistant Steve Clarke that their jobs are safe and that some funds will be made available for transfers. The chief executive Scott Duxbury will also remain at the club.

"I am delighted that an agreement has been reached and look forward to working with Scott Duxbury and his team in the coming years," Bernhardt said in a statement. "We have one of the best young management partnerships in Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke and the team has evolved with a great mix of experience and young players coming through from the academy.

"I can assure fans we will sanction investment in new players, but all within the parameters of sensible budgeting based on revenues generated by West Ham United. It will be my job to help facilitate this continued progress on the pitch, while ensuring the club's success is built on a strong financial footing.

"We have an initial two-year plan which includes improving the infrastructure at the club and we will be getting to work on this as soon as the new board is appointed."

The previous owner and chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, who lost his fortune in the credit crunch, and vice-chairman Asgeir Fridgeirsson have both left the club.

"I am delighted to say that West Ham United has been sold in an agreement that will secure the long-term future of this football club," said Duxbury. "Change is always unsettling, but I believe the new owners led by Andrew Bernhardt will bring stability to West Ham United and I hope all our staff and fans will join me in welcoming them to our club. At the same time, my best wishes and thanks go to Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson and Asgeir Fridgeirsson.

"This will allow us all to concentrate on next season and beyond, with Gianfranco Zola, technical director Gianluca Nani and I working to build on what we have achieved. We are all committed to a long-term vision. We are playing great football, have our academy at the heart of the club and are looking to the past to move forward in the right way. I can assure all fans that I will never lose sight of this. I am determined to bring success to West Ham United."
