McKINNEY - The Croatian Embassy officials had to see it for themselves.
Supetar, a village on Brac Island in the Adriatic Sea, would be rebuilt in McKinney?
Marijan Gubic, Croatia''s deputy ambassador to the U.S., viewed plans on Thursday for the replica village and toured the site of the proposed development, though he found only overturned dirt and surveyors'' markers.
But he left an evening reception convinced that ambitious plan to replicate the popular European vacation spot would be realized.
"Bringing Croatia to the United States is an important thing," Mr. Gubic told a gathering of local dignitaries and elected officials. "Texas and the president stand for freedom. My generation was fortunate enough to see Croatia become an independent democracy."
Mr. Gubic plugged his country as a beautiful destination for American tourists and a fertile market for U.S. investment.
"It''s a booming modernizing country," he said.
The replica village would be set on 45 acres in Stonebridge Ranch and include loft apartments, town homes, shops, office space and waterfront sidewalks, the developer said. Its buildings would boast stone exteriors and tile roofs.
Developer Jeff Blackard, who has vacationed in Croatia, will model the development after the Croatian village. It is to be on the southeast corner of Stonebridge Drive and Virginia Parkway, and called Adriatica Village at Stonebridge Ranch.
Mr. Blackard has hired Croatian consultants to ensure that the village''s architecture accurately duplicates Supetar''s character.
He travels to Croatia every three weeks to study the real village and meet with government officials, he said.
"Unbeknownst to our country, this project is headline news in Croatia," Mr. Blackard said.
I am going to space, and when I come back I have to pick up poodle crap.
