The ultimate NFL bidding war is expected to commence next week, after the California Senate approves an
$800 million stadium project in the Los Angeles suburb of Industry. (Town motto: We want your team.)
The
billionaire backing the construction is Ed Roski Jr., and the only
thing holding him up at the moment is he lacks a home team. That's
where the list of as many as seven prospective teams comes in:
The
Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, St. Louis Rams,
San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders.
"All
we've done is identify teams that need new stadiums, that have to move
because of the economics of the NFL," Roski spokesman John Semcken
tells the
Minneapolis Star Tribune. "These are teams that can't survive without a new stadium."
So
now the leaders of seven cities scurry to the municipal vault, to count
the cash reserves and see if they can afford to further appease their
football tenant, in this economy.
Semcken did say he will be ask
the NFL for guidance about how to "contact" the local teams.

So
here's a test for Roger Goodell. Does the NFL commissioner who has made
so much noise about personal conduct try to roadblock the kidnapping of
teams from loyal markets? Or does he just simply see the bright lights
of the Hollywood market and look the other way?
"We cannot build a stadium without a team," Semcken said. "Mr. Roski may be rich, but he's not stupid."
Well, yes he is, if he lures Al Davis to southern California for a second time.
