Things keep falling into the place for the Jaguars, who were called a team of destiny Sunday by quarterback David Garrard.
The destiny theory got some support Monday when the league announced
that the Colts can clinch the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage in
the playoffs Sunday by beating Denver.
That would mean the Colts would have nothing to play for against the
Jaguars except to shoot for an unbeaten season. Colts general manager
Bill Polian has already said he prefers to rest players once they
clinch although Colts coach Jim Caldwell hasn't weighed in on the
situation.
A lot of things have gone the Jaguars' way this year, notably
winning the coin toss in overtime against the Rams and Houston's Chris
Brown virtually gift-wrapping two games for them, the first one with a
fumble at the goal line and the second with a halfback pass that was
intercepted.
The Jaguars are home against the Miami Dolphins Sunday and then come
back the following Thursday night with another home game, this one
against the unbeaten Indianapolis Colts.
If they win both games, they'll probably make the playoffs. If they
split, they still might make it. If they lose both, the odds will be
against them.
They figure to split the final two games. They'll be underdogs at New England and favorites at Cleveland.
So if they sweep the Dolphins and Colts, they'll get to 10 wins with
a victory at Cleveland. That almost certainly would get them in the
playoffs.
If they split the Dolphins and Colts games, they can still get to
9-7 by beating the Browns in the season finale and that probably would
get them in.
I am going to space, and when I come back I have to pick up poodle crap.
