Weather Summary for Dec. 14th 2006 &n bsp;
Larry Schick – Meteorologist
Major Wind Storm Takes Aim at the Northwest
The storm has begun. We are now seeing rain increase around Western Washington with snow above 4000ft in the Cascades. The strong wind will not begin until later today, peaking later tonight. These will be the strongest winds we have seen this season.
The intense, developing low is now offshore off shore and west of Washington headed toward Vancouver Island.
Expect moderate to occasionally heavy rain in the next 24hrs, with amounts ranging from 1.0 - 3.5 inches, plus big snow in the mountains ( 10-15”). Snow levels will start at about 3500-4000ft, but drop sharply by Friday morning to about 1000ft. The precipitation Friday will be mostly snow above about 1500ft with rain showers for Seattle. Conditions are saturated and we will see moderate rises in stream flows. This does not appear to be a flooding event. We will monitor for changes, as rivers will be running moderately high.
Prepare for damaging winds tonight. Downed trees and power outages are likely. Debris on the road and a difficult Friday morning commute is possible.
Wind speeds this afternoon will be increasing 20-35 mph as the warm front sector of the storm moves through by early this evening. Winds will continue to increase from the south as the main low plows into Southwest British Columbia. By very late evening, about 8:00pm, to 2:00 AM Friday the winds will increase and peak from the south to 35 – 45 mph, gusting to 65 pm in the Seattle area. Gusts to 100 mph are possible along the coast.
It will be windy Friday morning, but on the decrease – south 20-40mph
The national TV audience will get another stunning look at wild NW weather while watching the Seahawks game tonight. The strong wind will play some mean tricks. It may be difficult to chip shot a field goal from 5 yards out, without it blowing back in your face. On the other hand, a record 70 yarder might be possible, if the wind is at Josh Brown’s back. Wouldn’t that be amazing?
Friday, the wind and showers will be decreasing, but expect some blustery conditions to continue early in the day. The weather looks fair with some sunshine over the weekend, but rather chilly with a chance of showers.
“Kam hit this tight end SO HARD, I swear I saw that TE’s soul leave Qwest Field right on that 35 yard line.”
