SLOVENIA

The 2004 vice-champion of Europe has had to overcome a period of austerity in the past years and has missed three of the past five major events since 2008, the qualification, among other things to the World Championships in Croatia (’09) and Sweden (’11).

Now, behind Poland in the qualification, the clearly tapered team has secured its ticket to Serbia and a measure of validation. Nevertherless, against opponents such as Iceland and Croatia, they remain the firm outsiders.

After the team ranked 11th at the EHF EURO 2010 in Austria, and since the start of the European Championship preparations, Coach Boris Denic has been at the helm.

In the meantime, old hands from the ‘glory days’ of EHF EURO 2004 such as Ales Pajovic have stopped playing. Only playmaker Uros Zorman and goalkeeper Gorazd Skof remain.

Right wing Dragan Gajic, who currently plays in Montpellier, has become the new star - at his side - his Montpellier teammate Vid Kavticnik. But it is not only the right court is strongly occupied, at the centre and on the left, the Zvizej brothers Miha and Luka as well as Jure Natek, who is also a top performer, take care of business.

GETTING TO SERBIA

From group three, Slovenia qualified after ranking second. During the Qualification, Slovenia suffered two defeats, but with four victories, eight points were enough to secure their ticket to Serbia.

KEY PLAYERS

Dragan Gajic

Dragan Gajic is one of the most experienced players in the Slovenian national team. Already at the age of 17, he played EHF Champions League with his home club RK Pivovarna Lasko Celje in the 2000/01 season and over time the extremely fast right wing won the Slovenian championship eight times. After an intermezzo at RK Zagreb and Maribor, Gajic returned to Celje in 2010 and became the clubs top scorer in the VELUX EHF Champions League.

Shortly after this glory, he left Slovenia and transferred to the French top club MAHB Montpellier where he plays with his fellow countrymen Vid Kavticnik and Primoz Prost.

Uros Zorman

The 30-year-old playmaker, currently under contract with Vive Targi Kielce, is no ordinary player, he makes his opinions known and at times this has caused offence. But on the other hand, he is a brilliant mind and knows how to steer a match. Since being called to national team duties, he has played over 130 matches for Slovenia. His professional playing career began in Ljubljana with Slovan then with Prule where Zorman won his first national championship title. Zorman has played for Ademar Leon, RK Celje and Ciudad Real with whom he won two Champions League titles.

THE COACH - Boris Denic

In December 2010 it became official, which many before had already assumed: Boris Denic was presented by the Slovenian Handball Federation as a successor of Noka Serdarusic. This followed Denic resigning his position in office in October 2010 and he also vacated his post as coach with the Champions League participant at that time RK Celje. Under Noka Serdarusic, Denic was already assistant coach of the Slovenian national team and ensured that the team made it through the qualification and to the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia. Additionally, Denic, contrary to Serdarusic, is not coaching any club team parallel to his national team assignment in order to avoid conflicts of interest. He has also included more experts into his coaching staff roster.

Nadam se nešto lakšoj utakmici od Islanda. Kvalitetniji smo, samo to trebamo pokazat na parketu...

slovenci su pokazali borbenost danas, nakon početnih 6-0 i na kraju izgubili prilično nesretno...mislim da bi ih to moglo poprilično ubit...moramo nabit tempo od početka i odmah se odvojit da ih dokrajčimo...ne im ponudit da se dignu i na početku povedu...mlada su ekipa ali ništa posebno...plitka 5-1 da se uspori zormana i nemaju šanse...

IZNAD SVIH!!! HRVATSKA!!!!

Umalo zaboravih. Moramo im vratit za onaj poraz u polufinalu europskog prvenstva 2004. gdje je Metličić ostao skoro bez oka ako je neko zaboravio. Još jedan motiv...
