World Handball Players of the Year 2006: Nadine Krause (GER) and Ivano Balic (CRO)

The readers of the World Handball Magazine and the IHF Web Site visitors had once more cast their vote and decided: Nadine Krause (GER/TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen) and Ivano Balic (CRO/Portland San Antonio) were elected 2006 World Handball Players.



Nadine Krause becoming as first German player World Handball Player of the year, succeeds her fellow countrywoman Anita Görbicz, while Ivano Balic, who was elected already for the second time after 2003 World Handball Player of the year, following the footsteps of Arpad Sterbik.



Nadine Krause obtained impressive 35.44% of votes cast by all handball fans worldwide to clearly relegate her competitors Gro Hammerseng (NOR/Ikast-Bording), who gained 20.74%, and Kari Mette Johansen (NOR/Larvik HK) with 8.74% to the second and third place. There was a real neck-and-neck-race in the men's category, in which Ivano Balic (25.98%) prevailed narrowly against Florian kehrmann (GER/TBV Lemgo), who received 24.65% of the votes, Icelandic Olafur Stefansson (ISL/Ciudad Real) ranked a little bit more behind with 13.04%.


Similar to previous years, the International Handball Federation and partner adidas counted ten thousands of entries again - evidence of the contest's great popularity, which has been announced since 1988. In doing so, above all the number of Internet users that voted online was as high as never before.


The interested reader may find below a portrait of the newly elected World Handball Players, the detailed result of the 2006 election as well as all previous World Handball Players.

In fact, she is lacking a lot of substance to terrify as unstoppable thrower. She is only 1.78m tall and only weighs 67kg. Even though she seems to be dainty in comparison to mighty opponents, Nadine Krause currently is the queen of the left back-court.


The 25-year-old right-hander enthrals as one of the most complete players, holds her own at the line and in the back-court alike and is said to be the key figure for the boost of the German national team that entered - with the Swabian as top scorer of the whole tournament - the semi-finals of the European Championship and only failed against World Champions Russia and their predecessors France. Krause, having already been top scorer at the 2005 WCh, became in addition part of the All-Star Team of the continental championship.



"Nadine is the Jo Deckarm of German women's handball", Armin Emrich says. The 55-year-old national coach once played with the exceptionally gifted player who dominated at that time - like Nadine Krause today - the left back-court and became World Champion in 1978. However, one year later Deckarm was involve in Hungarian Tatabanya in a tragic accident and has to live since then with serious restrictions.


In late 1999, 17-year-old Nadine Krause made her debut in the German A-Team. Shortly before, she ranked third at the U17 ECh and decided to sign with 1st league club HSG Herrentrup/Blomberg. After having won also bronze at the Women's Junior ECh in Hungary, she moved on to TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen grabbing with that team the 2002 DHB Cup and the 2006 Challenge Cup.


She will spend her future in Denmark: Nadine Krause committed herself for three years to FC Kopenhagen and there she will reach for new stars together with German international Maren Baumbach. The outstanding couple already won two German championships in the late nineties with the youth team of VfL Waiblingen. She intends to enlarge the list of success as much as possible - at least from the forthcoming WCh in France to the Olympic Games in Beijing.

There have already been many extraordinary handball players in the world. But Croatian Ivano Balic from the coastal town of Split has been already for years the most extraordinary so far. An artist, but also a dynamic player. Both a guider and an executor. Designer and gambler alike. And an actor. Sometimes also a bad actor. In any case, he's a much better handball player than an actor. To make a long story short: an all-rounder you may not have seen before in handball. Balic is a real star. The handball director, who has rightly been elected Most Valuable Player of the 2007 World Championship, knows that. He knows the ritual since 2003, at least every second year. Given these facts, it seems to be a little bit surprising that this is only the second time after 2003 that the exceptional player has been elected World Handball Player of the Year.



Those who know him, know that Balic does not run, he slides with the ball over the field of play and observes apparently inconspicuously and disinterested, but in reality very concentrated every movement of the opponents. He moderates the game of his team first softly, then powerfully, speeds up the game and decelerates it, lets his team-mates act and brings them into the game as well as himself thanks to the help of his team-mates. Sometimes this does not succeed, since his team-mates do not possess his high quality and do not perceive his tricks rapidly enough.



Balic lies in wait for his chance. He always poses a threat. Above all, he needs only small space to get to a successful goal throw. Jump shot, dive shot, diving side shot and straight shot - Balic knows all that rapidly with smooth movements from the shoulder. He anticipates and even provokes every upcoming gap. In the opponent's defence, he can distribute and take. Even lying on his back on the floor with his 1.89m and 91kg like a beetle, you must not lose track of him.



At present, his instinct for match situations is unattained worldwide. An attractive athlete with long hair, careful eyes and smooth in movements like a cat of prey on the prowl. Never skipping to hide how well-trained he is. The ball is the tool he celebrates handball with in the Croatian national team and in Spanish top team Portland San Antonio Pamplona. Yes, it seems that the ball obeys his will. His way to play is very high art, beautiful sport, aesthetic handball. Like when he won the 2003 World Champion title in Portugal and the 2004 Olympic gold medal in Athens as director of Croatian national team. Simply said: watching 28-year-old Balic play is always an eye candy.

Da, svaba ima vise, s tim sto su za Kehrmana glasali vjerojatno samo svabe (zaista ne vidim tko bi jos za njega glasao) dok za Balica ne glasaju samo Hrvati.

Svejedno, uzeo je titulu drugi put. Uz Duishebaeva on je jedini igrac koji dobija titulu drugi put, a nece ovo biti zadnji put.

Najbolji igrac svih vremena, uskoro i sluzbeno.

U izboru cijenjenog World Handball Magazinea i posjetitelja na službenoj stranicin krovne svjetske rukometne organizacije (IHF-a), Ivano Balić i Nadine Krause proglašeni su najboljima u 2006. godini...

Ivano Balić nakon 2003. godine ponovno je izabran za najboljeg rukometaša svijeta u ovom izboru. Ivano je tijesno pobijedio Nijemca Florana Kehrmanna dok je u ženskoj konkurenciji titulu ponijela Nicole Krause vrlo uvjerljivo.
Pozicije Nijemaca u oba izbora pokazuju otkud je ipak dolazio najveći postotak glasova, a time je i Ivanova pobjeda još vrijednija. Naš virtuoz osvojio je 25.98 posto glasova, drugoplasirani Kehrmann 24.65 posto dok je treći bio Islanđanin Olafur Stefannson koji je dobio 13.4 posto glasova.
Kod rukometašica uvjerljivu pobjedu odnijela je Njemica Nadine Krause. Pomalo neočekivano Krause je "razbila" konkurenciju osvojivši 35.44 posto glasova, ostavivši daleko iza sebe Norvežanku Gro Hammerseng koja je skupila 20.74 posto glasova.

Regularno i je najbolji igrac svih vremena, uz Duishebaeva, moram reci.

Bar ono sto sam ja gledao, samo je jos Talant mogao na taj nacin igrati se sa protivnicima.

Tijekom Interkontinetalnog kupa (Super Globe) koji se odigrao od 5. do 9. lipnja u Cairu, Egipat, pravna komisija Svjetske rukometne federacije (IHF) suočila se sa dva slučaja nesporskog ponašanja koje se dogodilo na utakmici između španjolskog Ciudad Reala i alžirskog Mouloudia Club d Alger. Komisija je odlučila sljedeće:

1. Igrač broj 10 Ciudad Reala, Talant Dušebajev je suspendiran kao igrač na godinu dana do 7. lipnja 2008. godine za sve domaće i međunarodne utakmice.

2. Igrač Talant Dušebajev mora platiti kaznu od 5,000 Eura.

3. Igrač broj 22. Mouloudia Slaqh Abdel Alah, suspendiran je kao igrač na tri mjeseca do 7. rujna 2007. godine za sve domaće i međunarodne utakmice.

4. Igrač Slaqh Abdel Alah mora platiti kaznu od 1,000 Eura.

Odluka je konačna!

Talant Dušebajev proglašen je za najboljeg svjetskog igrača 1994. i 1996. godine!
