I južni Tirol.

1944
: Heeresgruppe Mitte (=Army Group Centre), under Generalfeldmarschall Ernst Busch launches a counterattack which succeeds in reaching German units surrounded at Kovel in the Pripet swamps of north-western Ukraine, since the 19th March.

Waffen SS of the 5. SS-Panzerdivision "Wiking" carry a fallen comrade; Kovel was the site of fierce fighting between the 5th SS Panzer Division "Wiking" and the Red Army

1944: 28 USAAF B-24 heavy bombers, bombed for two hours at mid-day Bucharest for the first time. More than 5,000 civilians are killed and wounded. Seven allied aircraft were lost from enemy fighters, and 13 bombers were damaged and returned.

1945: The U.S. Third Army (Gen. George Smith Patton Jr) advancing toward Leipzig takes Suhl and Gotha and finally clears Kassel of German resistance. The British Second Army (Lt. Gen. Miles Christopher Dempsey) captures Osnabrück. The French First Army (Gen. Jean de Lattre de Tassigny) enters Karlsruhe.

1945: The 2nd (Marshal Rodion Yakovlevich Malinovsky) and 3rd (Marshal Fyodor Ivanovich Tolbukhin) Ukrainian Fronts complete the liberation of Hungary. Troops of the 2nd Ukrainian front capture Bratislava, Slovakia. The German forces counterattack in Moravská Ostrava and Nitra.

1945: Ohrdruf concentration camp, a Nazi forced labour and concentration camp located near Weimar, Germany, is liberated by U.S. forces.

While on an inspection tour of the newly liberated Ohrdruf concentration camp, Gen. Dwight "Ike" Eisenhower and a party of high ranking U.S. Army officers, including Generals Bradley, Patton, and Eddy, view the charred remains of prisoners that were burned upon a section of railroad track during the evacuation of the

1941: At 0515 hours, Hitler orders 12. Armee (Generalfeldmarschall Siegmund Wilhelm Walther von List) to cross the Bulgaro-Yugoslav border in Operation 25. Germany invades Yugoslavia without official declaration of war. The Yugoslav Third Army (four infantry divisions, one arty rgt and one cavalry battalion under Gen. Ilija Brašić), tasked of invading Albania from the north and attack the rear of the Italian armies in Albania relieving the Greeks on the occasion of German invasion, are paralysed by the rapid advance and pounding they suffer by the German forces who invade from Bulgaria and reach their rear. Only the advance toward Shkodër in the Albanian north made any progress at all, the other plans failed dismally. Elements of the 2. Panzer-Division (General der Panzertruppe Rudolf Veiel) cross the Bulgaro-Yugoslav border to the west and advance through Strumica valley with elements of the XXXX. Armeekorps (General der Kavallerie Georg Stumme) towards Stip with the mass of the unit driving south towards Thessaloniki. They encounter serious resistance at Novo-Selo (Yugoslav 20th Bregalnica Division under Lt. Gen. Kosta Adamović). Operation Punishment, the relentless bombing of Belgrade by 2,000 Luftwaffe bombers with more than 500 bombing sorties resulted in dozens of thousands of civilian casualties, begins.

1941: At 0530 hours, Prince Victor zu Erbach-Schönberg, the German ambassador in Greece, presented a note informing that Germany was at war with the Kingdom of Greece. Almost immediately, the Germans cross the Bulgaro-Greek border with the 6.Gebirgs-Division (General der Gebirgstruppe Ferdinand Schörner) on the right, 5. Gebirgs-Division (General der Gebirgstruppe Julius Ringel) plus Infanterie-Regiment 125 (Oberst Erich Pedersen) in the middle and with 72. Infanterie-Division (General der Panzertruppe Philipp Müller-Gebhard) on the left, aiming to open the Rupel pass, to advance fast towards Thessaloniki and establish bridgeheads across the Axios (Vardar) river (Operation Marita). The battalions of Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 141 of the 6th Mountain Division, after crossing the Bulgaro-Greek border, receive heavy enemy fire from all sides especially from unrecognised camouflaged Greek bunkers. The Rgt loses its CO, Oberstleutnant Eberhard Ebeling. Bunker for bunker along the Greek Metaxas line (=a chain of fortifications constructed on the Greco-Bulgarian border consisted of 22 independent clusters with 8,500 officers and men, the largest of which was Fort Rupel as it covered 6.1/3.8 mi out of the 155 km/96 mi of the full line; the whole chain was under E' Corps' commanding general, Lt. Gen. Constantine Bakópulos) has to be knocked out in heavy fights which demands several days. Hundreds of Junkers Ju-87 ground-attack aircraft, begin pounding the Greek fortifications.

1945: Preceded by a tremendous artillery and air bombardment, the 3rd Belorussian Front (Marshal Aleksandr Mikhaylovich Vasilevsky) with Four armies, 137,000 men, 530 tanks and 2,400 aircraft begin their final assault against Königsberg, which is garrisoned by 35,000 Germans troops under General der Infanterie Otto Lasch.

1945: Fierce urban combat begins when elements of the 3rd Belorussian Front (Marshal Aleksandr Mikhaylovich Vasilevsky), the Bulgarian First Army (Col. Gen. Vladimir Dimitrov Stoychev), the 6th Army (Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alexeyevich Gluzhdovski) and 2nd Guards Tank Corps (Col. Gen. Oleksi Semenovich Burdeinei), attack the Austrian capital, opening the Vienna Offensive. The O-5 Resistance Group, Austrians led by Carl Szokoll wanting to spare Vienna destruction, actively attempted to sabotage the German defences and to aid the entry of the Red Army. The only major German force facing the Soviets was the II. SS-Panzerkorps (SS-Obergruppenführer Wilhelm Bittrich), along with ad-hoc forces made up of infantry, volkstrumm and anti-aircraft units. Vienna's defence was commanded by General der Infanterie Rudolf von Bünau.

1945: Sarajevo is liberated from the Germans and Croatian Ustaše, by the Yugoslav Partisans.
