*** A Message from Stephanie Streeter ***
On
behalf of the U.S. Olympic Committee, I’d like to offer my
congratulations to Rio de Janeiro host city for the 2016 Olympic and
Paralympic Games.
Rio de Janeiro and the people of Brazil will
surely stage a spectacular Games, as they host hundreds of thousands of
fans from around the world and the most talented athletes compete
during the summer of 2016. All four Candidate Cities developed and
presented strong bids in what proved to be an extremely tight
competition.
We thank Mayor Daley, the City of Chicago, Pat Ryan
and Chicago 2016 for their tireless efforts, along with those of
thousands of athlete ambassadors, National Governing Body employees and
members, corporate backers, private donors, and MSOs. We are also
extremely grateful to President Obama and his administration for their
unprecedented support of the bid and the Olympic Movement.
We
are proud of the positive legacy the bid will leave for the City of
Chicago and for the Olympic Movement here in our country:
- The bid brought together Chicago’s diverse communities and
neighborhoods for a common purpose. It has led to planned redevelopment
of the near south side; opening up neighborhoods to the lakefront and
providing much needed diverse housing.
- For both Chicago and the U.S. Olympic Family, World Sport Chicago
hosted major international events and introduced Olympic and Paralympic
sport to thousands of young people. That work established a new hotbed
of Olympic and Paralympic sport in the heart of our country.
- This bid strengthened relationships with the Olympic and Paralympic
family worldwide and increased awareness and passion for the Olympic
Movement in the U.S. through new networks such as the U.S. Conference
of Mayors.
- This entire bidding process and the efforts in Chicago have raised
the standard of bidding in the U.S. to a whole new level. Chicago’s bid
has raised the bar, and it will benefit all of our future bids and our
partnership with the international Olympic Movement going forward.
The USOC will continue to be active internationally and demonstrate
that our efforts and support of the international Olympic Movement is a
long-term commitment. We look forward to continuing our partnership
with the IOC, other National Olympic Committees and International
Federations.
Right now, Team USA hopefuls some we know, and many
we will soon know already have their sights set on making it to Rio de
Janeiro for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We're looking
forward to supporting our athletes as they train for and compete in the
2016 Games, and to helping them achieve their dreams.
Congratulations again to Rio de Janeiro and Go Team USA,
Stephanie Streeter
I am going to space, and when I come back I have to pick up poodle crap.
