ASB Classic announces wildcard – Junior Grand Slam champion and future star, Ana Konjuh
Just days before the tournament is set to kick off, organisers of the ASB Classic are pleased to announce one of the brightest stars in world tennis and double junior Grand Slam champion, Ana Konjuh, will be joining the ASB Classic main draw field.
2013 saw Konjuh win in the singles and doubles at the Australian Open, represent Croatia at the Fed Cup where she defeated Urszula Radwańska, and take out her second junior Grand Slam title at the US Open – a win that led to her decision to compete in only professional events moving forward, even though she is able to play in junior tournaments for two more years.
Former Grand Slam winner and Croatian Fed Cup Captain Iva Majoli has publicly spoken about Konjuh as a future top ten player and believes it could be in the next two years.
ASB Classic Tournament Director Karl Budge said “We’re very excited to be able to offer Ana a wildcard into the ASB Classic – she is absolutely a star in the making and we can’t wait to see her take to our centre court. We hope to build a strong relationship with the Croatian and lure her back to New Zealand in future years to headline our event”.
