Berdych Engagement Nearly Foiled By Bad Weather

Melbourne, Australia

The Australian Open is living up to its “Happy Slam” reputation for No. 7 seed Tomas Berdych and his model girlfriend Ester Satorova. The two announced their engagement Tuesday during a Channel Seven interview on a beautiful day in Melbourne.

Too bad the conditions were not so cooperative when it came time for Berdych to pop the question to his girlfriend of two years.

“Actually, it was funny,” Berdych said, following his second-round win over Jurgen Melzer. “I had some plan on how to do it, but for three days we got pretty bad weather, so it's almost impossible to do that. Then it was nice, and they helped us to make a nice setup. It was after the dinner on the beach.”

Satorova has been a fixture in Berdych’s box throughout the ATP World Tour season. Though their lives revolve around the tournament calendar, the couple has learned how to escape the game when necessary.

“Whatever is happening in tennis, I can come back home or wherever I am, I can talk with my partner about basically everything,” he said. “We can talk about the other things, which is great, that I can just completely switch off from the tennis. That's basically the best way to relax.

“Then, once you step back on the tennis side, you are absolutely focused for whatever you do. That's it. So for me, I think it's a great combination.”

The couple may discuss "everything", but Satorova won't be making her fiancé's on-court fashion decisions any time soon. 

"The [H&M] designer team is quite big and strong, and they are already coming up with the ideas," Berdych assured reporters. "Basically, the whole line or the whole year is already almost preset, so I already know what's going to be going on through the whole year."
